The Billboard Recorded at Sydney’s Attic Studios with producer Lachlan Mitchell and mixed by Peter Katis, Prisoner is a collection of soaring, sunkissed rock and goth-tinged pop. Since its Australian release in mid-September, The Jezabels have all but demolished Oz. In a matter of weeks, the band had sold out every show it has played Down Under, debuted at #2 on the Aussie charts (held off only by worldwide phenomenon Adele), and won a pair of AIR awards. All in a day’s work.
Originally founded by Byron-bred singer Hayley Mary and keyboardist Heather Shannon, the band truly found its legs with the 2006 addition of guitarist Sam Lockwood and drummer Nik Kapoler. Like the three EPs that came before it (2009’s The Man Is Dead and She’s So Hard and 2010’s Dark Storm), Prisoner calls to mind the theatrics of Siouxsie-indebted post-punk and Kate Bush melodrama, never losing site of the outsized, stadium-ready streak that runs through its fifteen tracks.
