Because it Bugs Me

Because it's been bugging me: I happen to agree with Dustin Kensrue when he says you should give an album time and 10+ listens before coming to final judgment on it ... and personally, I think it's wrong to begin listening to an album one day before you officially "review" it. And, for the record, it has nothing to do with me disagreeing with the content (which I could discuss in great detail), it has to do with me disagreeing with the method. I think music - and the reader - deserves better.

Edit: Thanks for the plug tonsofun! Appreciate the views. Keep proving to everyone that you're one of the big reasons your magazine is all but obsolete. read more]

Couldn't agree more. The first few listens didn't really do anything for me, but the more and more I listened to it the more it started to grow on me. Looking forward to the review here.

You raise a good point....but I can make a judgment about an album like Cobra Starship's newest, or anything by a "crunkcore" band without listening to it 10 times.

I ultimately I agree with what you are saying although I find it more embarrassing than straight up 'wrong'. Anyone that is willing to publish or in any way distribute a review/public judgment on an album in a day really comes off as amateurish and quite frankly embarrasses themselves. Sure you can say you liked or disliked your first impression but to not allow yourself to properly digest an album before giving a professional or otherwise opinion/rating on an album is just ridiculous.

I'd assume Heisel had access to some other format of the album, such as a watermark or label stream, that doesn't post to last.fm long before even he got those mp3s. He does write for AltPress after all... Do you actually believe he was assigned a review and couldn't get music till the album leaked? Get real.

That aside, though, I do completely agree with Dustin. If I already like the band, I'll always find SOMETHING worth returning to for several listens, even if I'm feeling underwhelmed the first time. And if it's not already a band I like, well, that's why I'm usually just listening to my "recently added" playlist on shuffe on my iPod- so I keep hearing the songs and maybe after a 2nd or 3 or 4th time they'll stick.

Isn't the lyric "I'm on my way to hell" instead of "I'm on my way out" ?

I agree 100% with Dustin, as I am strictly that kind of listener. I need tons of listens to make a proper judgment. However, keep in mind people often load mp3's on to an mp3 player, or listen to their stuff on a computer without last.fm. Last.fm definitely isn't the deciding factor of whether somebody has listened to an album x number of times or not.

I 2nd what battybat17 said, but as always AltPress writes a shitty review, they've lost most of their credibility in my eyes

I not only believe it - I am almost positive of it. How's that for "getting real"?

There is no way it's a coincidence. Come on.
