Show Review: Lollapalooza (Part 1)
Show Review: Lollapalooza (Part 1)
08/11/11 at 06:39 PM by Alex DiVincenzo

Having started in 1991 under the conception of Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell as well as Ted Gardener, Marc Geiger and Don Muller, this year marks the 20th anniversary of Lollapalooza. While it began as a tour, it has since turned into an annual festival. Since 2005, Grant Park in the heart of Chicago, IL has been invaded for three days of the summer with some of the biggest and up-and-coming acts in alternative music.

I couldn't ask for a better way to start the weekend: as I walked in, The Vaccines were playing a cover of Minor Threat's "Good Guys Don't Wear White." I love the original song, and The Brits put a nice spin on it. I then traveled across the...[read more]

It looks like it was a blast. Was there talk about Portugal. The Man's van getting stolen? Glad and surprised they actually got it back.

I mention that in the second part of my coverage, but I didn't hear anything about it until Monday. I didn't know that they got it back - that's awesome!

They did get it back, but the last I heard, it was completely empty. Has there been any update beyond that?

Also, well-written Alex, though we didn't see many of the same bands.

My top 10 Lollapalooza sets:
1a.) Coldplay
1b.) Foo Fighters
3.) Fitz and the Tantrums
4.) Arctic Monkeys
5.) Delta Spirit
6.) MMJ
7.) The Joy Formidable (should be higher, but the set should have been longer than 30 min)
8.) J. Roddy Walston and the Business
9.) The Mountain Goats
10.) Ellie Goulding

No, but they posted band photos to their 'stolen equipment gallery' that people can keep an eye out for (like Craigslist, etc)-

Saw Muse last year, and you made a great choice by seeing them. Matt's voice is flawless live, and they sound so monstrous for being only a three piece (plus additional keyboardist). Don't know if I like them or the Foo Fighters better among the larger bands I've seen, they're really not comparable.

My surprise band of the weekend (someone I knew nothing about but am slightly in love with now) was The Naked & Famous. Their album (Passive Me, Aggressive You) has been on repeat since I got back to LA.

Other highlights/sets from the weekend for me:

Foo Fighters
Eminem
Maps & Atlases
OK Go
Cage the Elephant (during the rain)
Girl Talk (a perfect end to Friday night as I was slightly buzzed and with a large group of friends having fun)

No shit? I looked up his name for this article and thought it sounded familiar but didn't know why. If I had known, I would have heckled him

Too bad you missed Wye Oak and Typhoon. Typhoon was my favorite from all 3 days (even skipped the last half of Eminem to go to their after show with Dom). Sunday was stacked with bands, so I sadly missed The Joy Formidable and Manchester Orchestra in favor of Titus Andronicus and Explosions in the Sky.

I did the same on Sunday, but I didn't mind too much because I caught Man Orch opening for Blink a couple days later.

It's too bad that all those people missed out on MMJ, probably one of the top 5 live bands out there.
