Show Review: Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, The Menzingers (Providence, RI)
Show Review: Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, The Menzingers (Providence, RI)

Taking Back Sunday's 2002 debut, Tell All Your Friends, is undeniably important to our beloved music scene. The instant classic seemed to resonate with every dejected teenager who listened. (As a hopeless romantic myself, I recall pouring over the heart-on-sleeve lyrics in my formative years.) With a combination of raw energy, chemistry, brutally honest lyrics and complementary dual vocals, the band captured lightning in a bottle. A decade later, they are releasing that lightning on the TAYF10 Tour, on which they're performing the album in its entirety. I caught the November 20th stop at Lupo's in Providence, RI.

I had the chance to see this show in Providence as well, and I'm really happy I did. They did a great job, and the energy in the crowd was phenomenal! However, Adam's antics and spending half the time in the balcony made the show a little harder to enjoy.

I was in a spot where I could see him whether he was on stage or in the crowd, but it was probably pretty disappointing for those who fought their way up to the front barricade only to not be able to see him for like 5 songs.

Alex - Did you mind that he went into the crowd for half the set? For the Philly Electirc Facotry shows he went up on the balcony for 4.5 out of the 10 TAYF songs and it made the set feel really disconnected as he sang with a bunch of drunk people that were relaxing while leaving everyone in the pit not knowing where to look.

I wouldn't say I minded per se, but I think it would have been more effective if he had only stayed out there for a song or two.

Thats what I was thinking. It was cool for "Great Romances" & "Ghost Man" but when "Timberwolves" came on I wanted him back on the stage with the band all doing their thing together. Still a real good show.

I'm gonna be touring with Hit The Lights in December. I'll try and say hey if I see you at the Boston Glamour Kills holiday show.

Awesome. I just looked through your videos. You have some good stuff. How was tha Slipknot show? That's a band I feel like I have to see sometime in my life. And how big is the venue you go to? I can't imagine seeing them in a 2000 capacity situation. Would be insane

Slipknot was absolutely awesome! Easily one of my favorite bands to see live. You can read my review of the show here. That was the Mayhem Festival, so it was at a big ampitheater. But the first time I saw them back in like 2004 was at The Palladium which was about 2,000-cap and it was sold out. It was ridiculous.

It just drew so much focus off the rest of the band, they seemed so disconnected. I didn't mind, I was at the front barricade near the right speakers, so I could see him wherever he was, and he payed a lot of attention to everyone, but the "band" aspect was lost when he was at the bar and on the balcony. But it was probably a really intimate time to be in the back of the crowd.

I found it really weird to be in a crowd that was entirely facing the back of the venue for multiple songs. Also, did you hear Adam trying to get the crowd to cheer for The Menzingers? He kept saying their name wrong and I felt some awful second hand embarrassment haha.
Have to say, I was really disappointed in the crowd reaction for The Menzingers (or lack thereof). I get that everyone was there for TBS but it was my first time seeing The Menzingers as well and I was looking forward to seeing them the most because I've seen TBS and Bayside before. I was sorta bummed to be up front with very unhappy TBS fans camped out on barricade with like four other kids singing along. Hopefully seeing them with La Dispute in January will be with a better crowd
