The Lord's Prayer Written Over Coffee
The Lord's Prayer Written Over Coffee
10/22/11 at 12:23 PM by AP_Punk
I still find it hard to believe that people were so up in arms over The Wonder Years' "I Won't Say the Lord's Prayer", not long after Suburbia came out. I guess it's controversial if you've only been raised on christian metal and pop-punk songs about girls - but really, it's not as biting as many would claim it to be. And when you compare to it many other punk songs dealing with that same issue? It's as threatening as a newborn kitten.

And speaking of other punk songs in the same vein as "The Lord's Prayer", "Words Written Over Coffee" by The Riot Before is much more poignant and moving - if you're still unfamiliar with it, get familiar with it now.

It's too good to be too underrated, and that goes for the whole album, Fists...[read more]

Backed fully. Not to take anything away from the Wonder Years, but it's hardly a new topic of conversation. And even more than that? It's the sort of thing that any intelligent, forward thinking teenager/college kid/person under 30 should be thinking about. And hopefully talking about. I don't trust people who don't at least think about religion and their stance on issues in the world. Even if--after thinking it through--the answer is merely "I don't fucking know what the answer is."

The trouble is, not enough people take the time to talk about it, think about it, etc. Or maybe I'm just cynical...

Also: I think "Dynamite Shovel" from Upsides covers a similar issue/topic from a different angle ("You can hide behind the bible--we still know you're fucked").

Regarding Dynamit Shovel, that line and song are directed solely at extremist religious groups such as the Westboro Baptists and such. The "God Hates ****" bunch.

I think that the reaction is exactly what the song is discussing: that "Christians" are so quick to judge and believe that anything that questions religious beliefs is evil. Funnily enough, I was raised in a strict Christian church and because of that can fully understand the lyrics to this song, no matter if I disagree about not wanting to be saved, even though I know what the song is meant to portray. It's so difficult once you get older to not question the beliefs you've been taught since you were little, especially when you see such hypocrisy and hurt through going to certain churches. In the end, the song isn't radical or even sacrilegious really. Take out a couple of lines and you've got something not that different than even some lyrics from modern Christian bands which aren't just worship bands.
