Butch Walker Week: The Introduction
Butch Walker Week: The Introduction

Anyone who has interacted with me much on the forums knows that I have two “Personal Jesuses” as far as rock ‘n’ roll is concerned. The first is Bruce Springsteen, whose catalog Thomas already reviewed in full a few years ago. The second is Butch Walker, who is releasing a fantastic new EP called Peachtree Battle next Tuesday. In celebration of the new release, I’m going back through Butch’s catalog, through these albums have changed and shaped my life and my love for music over the past decade, and writing about each of them. Starting with the first release from Butch’s 1990s power pop band, the Marvelous 3, and cycling through his solo work, I will spend the next week building a...[read more]

Butch Walker is also my, as you put it, 'personal Jesus'. He is just an amazing songwriter, musician and pretty awesome person.I've had the pleasure of meeting him on many occasions. I was also part of a reality show in which Butch performed at my wedding as the first dance. Truly an amazing moment and not something that just any musician would do for a fan. I look forward to Butch Walker week and reading what you have to say. I just saw Butch on Saturday in Athens, GA. Show was amazing, as per usual.

Awesome stuff, dude. Jealous about the first dance thing. Currently planning my own wedding, and I only wish I could score a set-up that sweet.

What was the setlist like on Saturday? And is he out on his own, or are the Black Widows along for the ride? I can imagine this tour is going to be pretty cathartic for him.

It's not the Black Widows. It's Jake Sinclair, from BWs, but a few other guys I wasn't familiar with. But it is a full band set. Played most of the songs from the new EP, Weight of Her, Hot Girls, Mixtape, Hair bands, Synthesizers, Closer to the truth, Passed Your Place, etc. good mix of stuff, but mostly last few releases. If you check out Butch Walker Fansite on FB or Butch Walker Austrailia page there are pics of set lists going around.

I remember checking him out because he produced the academy is... Santi. I bought letters and I have never been the same. I love all his material. He is among the last artists I need to see live. He never comes through Utah though

Nice. Sounds pretty similar to the set I saw him do in Chicago last month. He's always wonderful live, but I kind of wish he'd pull out some of the older stuff/Marvelous 3 material for this tour, especially since it's a special occasion and since he doesn't have that much new stuff to draw from.

He played Freak of the Week with the Marvelous 3 last week at his Atlanta show. Now that I live in GA, it's my bucket list item to see him in ATL for the hometown shows which are always awesome. He used to play more M3 stuff earlier in his solo career.

Yeah, I saw him for the first time in 2006 and there were two or three M3 songs in the set. Also one of the only times I've seen him play anything off Self-Centered, which I think he just plain doesn't like.

I'll probably do one for U2 if they end up releasing a new album this year. Thomas already hit Springsteen though, so that's a big one for me.

that's a good idea. it feels like it's been so long since U2 has released anything.

I'd love to see Bob Dylan, Tom Waits or Van Morrison too.

Yeah, it's been ages. Rumor is that the album is going to come out in December and that it's their most exciting work since Achtung Baby. By the time it drops though, it will have been almost five years since the last record.

I could see myself doing Bob Dylan someday. But that would have to be a yearlong project or something ridiculous like that.

yeah, I read something in RS years ago about them working with RedOne and some other dance producers. would be interesting to have something with more electronic elements from them.

it might be cool to have the whole staff rally together to take on a project like that. each interested person gets to pick one album from his early and later years, or something like that.
