Late Night Thoughts: Cursive
Late Night Thoughts: Cursive

Tim Kasher makes Omaha, Nebraska seem like it's the biggest place to lose your mind in, or the most relaxing place to sit and create. Either way, the man has written some pretty tall tales in the form of four boisterous albums in the past decade, all holding their own worth musically and lyrically, crammed into part of the fifteen years of the band's creation.

Sure, there are those still yearning for The Ugly Organ Part Two, but it's not going to happen, and if those naysayers saw Kasher yelling "Lord, let us go!" at the end of "Retreat!" or the stunning closer of "What Have I Done?" then maybe certain moods and animosity would be indifferent and incline to change face.

Cursive's set tonight was a spanning hymnal of what the...[read more]

I have to admit that I am one of those people begging for a The Ugly Organ Pt II but I know its not gonna happen. Ive seen them live several times and for some reason it seems like they just don't even do it for me live anymore...last I saw them was at The Slowdown after the release of Happy Hollow. Ive loved everything they had done up until Mama, Im Swollen. Im not sure what it is but I just cannot get into it like their previous albums.

I think that the latest album is closer to what you expect Tim to do with The Good Life and not Cursive. I need to give Mama another chance before I write it off completely. I felt the same way about the newest Faint album and a couple more listens I started to really like it. But even then it didn't hold a candle to Danse or even Wet From Birth.

Is it just me or did the national hype that the Omaha scene started getting a couple years ago end up dulling the blade of the Saddle Creek knife that started carving into the music industry before Conor Oberst was a big name? I could care less how many other people like a band that I listen to but it really seemed that many of the Saddle Creek bands just lost their edge and sound that defined them.

I didn't really like Cassadaga or any of Oberst's solo albums that much, Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink didn't work as well apart as they did together in Azure Ray(thank God they are back together planning on an album), The Faint left the label(still makes no sense to me why they parted ways), Critera seemed to have dropped off the planet, and I have sadly come to terms that there probably will never be another Desaparecidos album.

Any particular tracks on Mama I should focus in on that feel or sounds anything like Domestica, The Ugly Organ, or Happy Hollow?

I had been listening to Cursive for years and years since Domestica, but they never made their way to my neck of the woods in Ottawa, and as my musical tastes changed; they had sort of fell off the radar for me by the time Mama, I'm Swollen was released.

Long story short - I saw them this past summer in Montreal at Osheaga in sunny, rainy, and (incredibly) muddy conditions, and I fell in love with them all over again.

Cursive wasn't a priority for me see to see at the time. However, in retrospect, I think they might have been one of, if not my favourite performances of the entire festival. They played with so much energy and emotion, it's hard to believe they might have played some of these songs hundreds or thousands of times in the past. Some bands have a tendency to loose the urgency that is associated with their music, but not Cursive. Kasher and company blew my mind with their (too short of a) set and [yet, still] supplied me with one of the most enjoyable shows I remember in recent history.

That's just my own two cents, though - I couldn't have been any more impressed as I sang along with everything I could pre-Mama (which I've become very acquainted with since then).

I saw them live way earlier this year and had the same experience. And to Gleebo, "Mama, I'm Swollen" and "Mama, I'm Satan"

Happy Hollow is one of my favorite albums and The Ugly Organ and Mama, I'm Swollen are amazing as well. Glad to see that they bring it live.

"From the Hips," "Mama, I'm Satan," and "Mama, I'm Swollen" --- the album takes a few listens. Surprisingly Kasher told me in our interview that he felt like he wrote this closer to a Good Life album...so good ear...interview will be up this week...two parts...

hmm...in no particular order, from what I remember: The Martyr, Dorothy at Forty, Retreat!, I Couldn't Love You, Mama I'm Swollen, Gentleman Caller, Mama I'm Satan, Butcher the Song, Sierra, What Have I Done? ENCORE: Art is Hard, The Casualty, From the Hips, Big Bang

I'm missing one or two more...the encore is right though...
