Five and Alive: Mix(CD)tape Playlist or Whatever
Five and Alive: Mix(CD)tape Playlist or Whatever
08/22/11 at 12:19 AM by Adam Pfleider
If you told 17-19 year old me what an iPod playlist was, that kid would probably look at you like you were speaking in tongue. More so than that, the idea of even downloading full albums from file-hosting sites as a means of discovery would be future news opposite searching for an album with track-by-track downloads on file swapping programs. My last few years of high school and early years of college were spent with mix CDs made up of my favorite tracks still played on a CD player (this ancient brick of a device) through a tape deck on my drives home in my '91 Buick LaSabre (probably the closest I'll ever come to owning a tank).

So these are five of the best CDs my friends found in my apartment and car and how I feel about them today. I'm including full track listings as to...[read more]

The only one I would take away is NOFX, but I can't stand that band, so that's just me. You were into Denver Harbor? Nice. Were you also into Fenix TX during their glory days on Drive-Thru? Good times.

It's all about their self-titled man. "All My Fault" and "Minimum Wage" got me through my junior high/early high school years. Lechuza's good too, but I'm all about that self-titled.

BLUE LIGHT SPECIALS, BABY! Yes, the store still exists, albeit not prospering, haha.

YES! It is about the self-titled. I think "Speechless" was the first emo song I ever heard. hahaha

'Tis a good song, my friend. Also, I used to literally (probably not so much) think that Denver Harbor wrote the ballad "All I Want" about my relationship with my girlfriend (now wife), lol. Oh, the ego and selfishness of youth!

The layout of your last mix is how I used to do a lot of my mix CDs. There's some good tunes on these mixes though. Impressive. Particularly enjoying reminiscing Beloved and As Cities Burn tracks.

Now this is a fun one. I had a series of mixtapes I made titled A1, A2, etc. of single songs I thought were cool from bands I was finding. I think I went to 15, and then I started just putting two full albums together on blank CD's, which is what I do now. Only mixes I've made recently are for my friend's birthday. Playlists died with my mom's computer, but I found A2 and A7. I remember them showing a very clear evolution of music for me, and I learned how to put a mix together.

A2:
1. Royskopp - Remind Me
2. Ben Kweller - Wasted and Ready
3. Hellogoodbye - Winter Wonderland
4. The Lemonheads - Mrs. Robinson
5. Fall Out Boy - Grand Theft Autumn
6. The Turtles - Happy Together
And that's all, I remember making them all to about 18, so I don't know what happened with this one.

A7, of which I found two copies, cause this was a good one:
1. Say Anything - Walk Through Hell
2. Love Hate Hero - I'll Make It To the Brigades
3. Panic! At The Disco - There's A Good Reason These Tables blah blah blah
4. I Set My Friends On Fire - Soulja Boy cover
5. Arctic Monkeys - You Know I'm No Good
6. Say Anything - Alive With the Glory of Love
7. Envy on the Coast - Suckerpunch (Definitely favorite song from them still)
8. Boy Girl Sleepover - Can We Sleep (They broke up, this is still a jam though)
9. Metro Station - Kelsey (Fight me)
10. Fear Before the March of Flames - Fashion Tips Baby
11. Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra - Ain't That A Kick in the Head
12. Sense Fail - You're Cute When You Scream
13. Panic! At The Disco - London Beckoned blah blah blah
14. House Vs. Hurricane - Comforting Our Thoughts in a Continuous Blue
15. Envy on the Coast - Temper Temper
16. The Junior Varsity - The Sky! (Recently remembered how fucking great this song is)
17. The Spill Canvas - Self-Conclusion
18. Chiodos - We're Gonna Have Us a Champagne Jam (Best song on that album for sure)
19. Beauty and the Beast soundtrack - Belle (A couple of my friends did this musical, I got the soundtrack and sang this song and Gaston with them all the time).

Second version, no idea which one I made first.
1. Say Anything - Walk Through Hell
2. Love Hate Hero - I'll Make It To the Brigades
3. Envy on the Coast - Sugar Skulls
4. Panic! At The Disco - Constantly Thank God For Esteban
5. I Set My Friends On Fire - Soulja Boy cover
6. Arctic Monkeys - You Know I'm No Good
7. Dance Gavin Dance - Its Safe to Say You Dig the Backseat
8. Boy Girl Sleepover - Can We Sleep
9. Fear Before the March of Flames - Fashion Tips Baby
10
. Scary Kids Scaring Kids - The City Sleeps in Flames
11. Envy on the Coast - Temper Temper
12. Panic! At The Disco - London Beckoned blah blah blah
13. Scary Kids Scaring Kids - My Darkest Hour
14. Envy on the Coast - Suckerpunch
15. The Junior Varsity - The Sky! (Recently remembered how fucking great this song is)
16. Enter Shikari - When A Jealous Man Finds a Gun
17. Chiodos - We're Gonna Have Us a Champagne Jam (Best song on that album for sure)
18. Beauty and the Beast soundtrack - Belle (A couple of my friends did this musical, I got the soundtrack and sang this song and Gaston with them all the time).

So looking back, that's still pretty solid for me. I bolded the ones I still love with no shame, but most I haven't heard in a while. I got that sweet JV song, HVH, Can We Sleep still rules, solid EOTC, SA, and Panic songs, I think the ones after this started getting good, and the one before was like five Panic songs. I could combine these two and make a great mix. maybe I'll find some more...

Pretty rad take on this! Inspiring me to go back and dig up some of my old mixes. Unfortunately most of mine have gone the way of the buffalo over the years, but...Yeah. Great commentary, haha.

Also: I forgot Locale A.M. existed. Great, high-energy cheeseball pop music! I forget how I found them, way back when but I think it may have been MP3.com

I'd made one which I put a lot of effort into because I really liked (and still do like) this person, so it was to show how much I appreciate them being in my life.

I spray painted it pink, used gold glitter paint to write text across it, and a typewriter to type across cut up carpet coloring chart squares which i used to make into a small tracklisting booklet. I then poked tiny holes into each end and tied them together with pieces of guitar string.

First track was 88 Fingers Louie's "Tomorrow Starts Today", some obscure female fronted glam rock band, a short political speech from the 70's as an interludes, and I think it ended with a short Limp Wrist track.
