Such a beautiful leaf is now just another crunch
Under a cross country runner’s shoe
Or a tire of a pickup truck delivering potatoes

Before the crunch, you could see all the veins
You could tell it was breathing by its beautiful array
Of crackles and such a bright color green.

The texture was rough on one side
Yet so smooth on the other
