No Genres, Just Music
No Genres, Just Music

It's no secret that I have made a lot of progress in terms of "indie" coverage on AP.net in the past two years. I'm extremely appreciative and thankful to all my contacts in the industry that have helped make this happen; those who have actually taken a chance with the AP audience despite knowing that their bands may not receive as much attention on a site such as ours. I personally believe that is key in advertising--reaching new audiences. It's great to reach a specific audience that will undoubtedly care about a certain band or genre, but isn't it also a good thing to reach new ones? Or is it only important for bands to be promoted to already existing fans? I can simply not wrap my mind around the fact that certain labels/agencies believe the latter to...[read more]

Damn straight. I don't like any pop punk bands. Not even Blink 182. I don't even remember how I found this site but I have found a mountain of bands here that I wouldn't know otherwise, and this is pretty much the only site I use to find music. Fuck, sometimes I have to even stop myself from reading the homepage because I get so overloaded with new music that I just can't absorb it all.

People care way too much about the little things...

Usually judging books by their covers or caring too much about genres or music classifications...

It's frustrating because it limits the music discovery process exponential.

Music should be subjective & objective...

You don't need a label for everything.

I appreciate your diligent work on the site & it's definitely changed in a positive way.

It's incredibly diverse now =D

you know i have your back. indie lovin girls you make the rockin world go round

what if you made an imprint site, like an imprint label. streams/whatever get posted in both places, but then you don't have to go hurdling "absolutepunk.net" when you requests things. call it, no genres, just music.

Being somebody who tries to do exactly the same and holds the same thoughts and values as you as far as the music we enjoy itself to the featuring of various genres and reactions, or potential struggles in doing so I back this blog 100%.

Pretty sure many people feel the same way. Everyone's tastes have evolved at this point, along with our site's.

Thank you! I always appreciate your support and feedback on bands I cover. One of my most loyal readers!

Haha I wish I could do that. A column titled "No Genres, Just Music" sounds pretty awesome.

I really couldn't have said it better myself. Music is more important than people may think. I'ts not just silly/fun sounds, it's a legit language that everyone should take the time to listen to and learn through listening.

One of the things I've always loved about this site is its ability to introduce new, unknown bands to a huge amount of people who haven't heard them before. It's crazy to me that any small label or PR company wouldn't want to take advantage of that. AP.net's legion of indie-loving nerds is increasing daily, so let's keep getting new music to them!

This blog post has so many good points. I'm extremely thankful for all of your posts on the site; they've opened me up to a whole new world of music I wouldn't have found otherwise. The only reason I really come to AP.net anymore is for the bands you post. Thanks for being persistent and posting what you know and love even if it gets minimal replies.

The irony in me listening to Ellie Goulding as I am reading this is too awesome to ignore. Alas, Lueda hits the nail on the head. I have discovered many more "indie" bands on this site versus, say, Pitchfork, simply because of the diversity AP.net supports. In a way, that diversity legitimizes the "indie" acts that are discussed on this site as a simpler form of "checks and balances." sometimes a site gets too wrapped up in itself and the "scene" it promotes that it fails to see the flaws in the music it prescribes. It is much like a writer who spends too much time on a work; without diverse opinions, the writer is penning blind.

Beautifully said, Eda.
I still think it ridiculous that the name pigeonholes you into stupid stereotypes, but those people are just missing out. Sucks to be them.
Also, it's just as annoying as those long time users who won't even expand outside their pop punk box here.
