Better late than never?

The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips are probably one of the most defining bands of all time. For the past 20 years they have become the poster child for being the kings of weird. It's hard to find someone that hasn't heard of or doesn't really care for The Lips. They hardly release anything that isn't top notch and their latest album Embryonic sticks to that tale. Sticking with what they know The Lips have delivered with the usual craziness but in the form of two discs. Embryonic is just one of those albums that when you're done with it, you feel like you have really experienced the album. The Flaming Lips never disappoint and nothing has changed here, they are still the same crazy band you feel in love with oh so long ago.

Listen to Embryonic here.

Grizzly Bear on The Tonight Show
10/13/09 at 08:18 AM by Keagan Ilvonen
I'm not sure if there is a better band out there right now. Grizzly bear slays everything that's thrown in front of them and Conan was no match. The best part of the performance is Victoria Legrand of Beach House who provides some of the most beautiful back up vocals I have ever heard.

This house isn't a home
10/09/09 at 09:44 PM by Keagan Ilvonen
So I have been gone to college for over a month now and love it there. It really is my first real experience of freedom and I can't fully explain how great it feels. I have made all new friends and created bonds that are better then some I have ever made in the past. Now I come home on a long weekend to spend time with my family and work. But during the first night back I have a hard time adjusting to being back where I have lived for so long. Nothing feels right here and I feel so out of place. All of my stuff is gone minus my bed and a few miscellaneous things. I don't even feel like this is my home anymore. It feels as if I'm just staying at a friends house for a few days to get some work done until I return home. Maybe I'm just weird. Is this the same for anyone else?

Growing up we were always told to never judge a book by it's cover. Well, once again that saying comes into play with the band Hockey. If anyone other than Jason Tate had said to go check out a band named Hockey I probably would have told them to get the fuck out. I mean come on, a name like Hockey is ridiculous. Sure, there are tons and tons of scene bands with enticing names like dot dot curve [aka :)] But Hockey? It's just so bland and has no upbeat to it at all. Luckily, I did check out the band thanks to Jason Tate, they do have redeeming qualities, and they are on the verge of being the next Strokes in the mainstream indie world. Their debut album Mind Chaos comes out today and is bound to become a favorite of indie pop rock lovers. The band has so many options for singles that they have basically made it so they can't fail unless they stop playing their instruments. If you haven't jumped on the bandwagon it's about time you seriously consider it, because as the weather cools down and the water begins to freeze it's just about that time to play some Hockey.

New Vampire Weekend Song

Vampire Weekend's new single "Horchata" is on their site for streming/downloading. I have been waiting for new material for some time and this couldn't come at a better time.

Artist of The Week: September 22nd, 2009
09/22/09 at 02:41 PM by Keagan Ilvonen
With the lack of internet in my dorm room and being constantly busy I wasn't able to post last week's artists of the week so I will make up for it by posting last week and this weeks in one major blog.

Brand New

What is there for me to say about Brand New that AP hasn't already said. Daisy hasn't hit me like TDAG did but it still has some great things to offer. For me it was a complete grower. My first listen I didn't care for it at all and with every future listen I like it more and more. If you don't like Brand New I doubt that I can persuade you, but if you do like them, you basically know what you are going to get here. Or do you?

After releasing the highly impressive Alchemy Index I was curious as to how Thrice would be able to do something to top everything they have already done. The Artist In The Ambulance was a classic just for the sake that no one was doing what Thrice did at the time they were doing it and if they were it couldn't even compare. Vheissu pushed the envelope with the band challenging the sound they had mastered and pushing into new territory. Then the Alchemy Index hit and they mastered a newer mellower and mature sound. I can't say enough about how much I respect everyone in this band and everything they stand for. If you want to support a band that is doing everything right in music it would be Thrice. The leak of Beggars 3 months early was a travesty and everyone knew it so we all reached out and showed them how much we appreciate what they do by buying merch and albums. The official physical release of Beggars has finally come and gone and I can personally say that I scraped together enough change to go to my local record store and payed for Beggars with $10 in quarters, dimes, and nickels. It's the least I can do for a band that has given so much back to their fans. You all should do the same, this is one of the best releases of the year, definitely in my top ten albums of 2009.

Every Time I Die

Everyone's favorite hardcore group is back in action with their latest effort New Junk Aesthetic. While I was a fan of The Big Dirty it left a little to be desired. Not to say that it wasn't a step up from Gutter Phenomenon but it was just missing something. Whatever that something was, the boys found it on the new album. The heaviest and grittiest riffs to date are showcased on this gem. Keith's witty lyricism shines more than ever and leaves you with a feeling you can't quite describe. You can truly see that this is a band that has fun with what they do and love doing it. If you like being punched in the face and kicked in the balls only to be seduced by a sexy mistress this is the record for you.

KiD CuDi

It takes a lot to live up to hype. KiD CuDi has had to do this for sometime after basically being taken under Kanye West's wing. CuDi has had to live up to enormous amounts of hype that the man claims he didn't even want in the first place. His hit single "Day N Nite" blew up over the radio this summer and left the media and fans wanting more. It seemed like forever but Man On The Moon finally dropped. While I think it could have been a lot better and doesn't live up to what CuDi is fully capable of, it's a solid release that is a stepping stone in the young and upcoming career of Kid CuDi.

Volcano Choir

So I have been impatiently waiting for new Bon Iver ever since the release of the Blood Bank EP. With no release set for 09, I was pleased to hear Justin Vernon would be releasing some material just in the form of Volcano Choir. Justin and his friends Collections of Colonies of Bees make up Volcano Choir which basically ends up being a more experimental Bon Iver that dares to go outside of Vernon's comfort zone and still works 100%. Call this a pitchfork hype band if you want but they are so much more than that so don't be fooled.

I haven't really had a good amount of time to let The World I Want To Leave Behind in but from what I have heard and taken in this record is fantastic. It will be tough for Moneen to top The Red Tree but I feel like the new album is anm honest effort. The long song titles aren't there anymore but that doesn't mean the songs are lacking anything. Moneen continues to one of Canada's most overlooked bands and it's a crime.

Polar Bear Club

I'm not really sure what there is to say about Polar Bear Club. They are heavy, catchy, and gritty all at the same time. While most artists that try and pull this off come across as annoying and tiring PBC is the exact opposite. They are a refreshing taste of music that hasn't been around since Hot Water Music called it quits. Chasing Hamburg follows in the footsteps of their debut album and goes off on a few insane tangents as well. I have only got to spin the album a few times but it's definitely worth your time. Don't look past this band.

There aren't many artists that I follow and devote myself too 100% but The Format was one of those bands. Lyrically they just stuck. It didn't matter how intricate or simple they always hit home. Musically they had everything I wanted in a band, fully orchestrated jingles and stripped down acoustic ballads. Nate's voice hooked me as soon as my ears got a taste of what he was capable of. So of course when they announced their "Hiatus" I was devastated. But luckily for me a savor was announced not too long after. Nate had picked up a few friends and started a new project called fun. I didn't know what to expect from this but anything new from Nate excited me. After months and months of waiting their debut album has finally hit stores. Aim and Ignite mixes everything you loved about The Format and some new sounds that gives it a completely new twist. If for some reason you had doubted Ruess's talent to turn a pop song this album will reassure you with more than enough confidence for a dozen people. Finding someone who doesn't enjoy this album is about as rare as getting Jesse Lacey to speak up about Daisy. Do yourself a favor and get this album. If you need any more convincing read Drew's review here.
