Manga Magazine Summer 2006 issue
08/26/06 at 04:47 PM by slickwataris
After skipping their spring issue I was surprised to find the summer issue waiting inside my mailbox today, only two days before I start school. The latest issue is considerably thinner and only contains a fourth of the previews the winter 2006 issue held. The cover is a picture of Dinah from Bizenghast eating an apple, notably she's a skeleton from the bust down. My copy came a little wrinkled (I guess wrapping it in plastic is too much to ask for a free magazine :D) and the spine was incredibly stiff. Unlike the previous issues, there is no "authentic" manga side, all previews are devoted to Tokyopop's original English manga titles. The issue opens with a introduction by the editor boosting about the company's new myspace-esqe website followed by the table of contents and letters page. They then start the "preview" section of the book with the following titles.

SNOW by Morgan Luthi

Snow is basically about an alien who crashes on earth with plans to invade. The preview is pretty action packed and exciting. The artwork is very crisp and clear and not overtoned like the rest of Tokyopop's original titles. On the margins of the pages are notes about the creation of the story including how many times they've rejected the author's work.

BIZENGHAST by M. Alice LeGrow

This is a preview of the recently released volume 2 of the series. Even though I read the preview of volume 1 I still have no idea what's going on. The main character, Dinah, is supposedly crazy and she sets out to prove to her aunt that she isn't. The comments in the margins tell how the skeletons in Dinah's closet will be revealed in this volume but I can't say I care to find out.

RE:PLAY by C. Lijewski

Punk rocker girl finds punk rocker guy playing on the street for loose change and brings broke punk rocker guy home so her punk rocker friend can evaluate his talent and see if he fits in his punk rocker band. The comments hint at the two punk rocker guys becoming more than just punk rocker friends, maybe a little punk rocker romance is in the works? :shrugs:

After our incredibly short preview section we hit something new to Manga Magazine, a sneak peek at Tokyopop's Fall 2006 catalog. In here we see pictures of all their new releases in the months of September, October, November and December, although some in the later months are just volume 1 cover place holders. On the upper portions of the pages are brief synopsis of their newer titles as well as new box sets including the 4-volume series Kingdom Hearts. They obviously want you to check out their "amazing" new website to find more information so here are some new titles that look interesting to me:

Star Trek: Shinsei Shinsei
Bus Gamer
Innocent W
Laya: The Witch of Red Pooh
Haunted House
Welcome to the N.H.K.
12 Days
Rose Hip Rose (from the creator of GTO)
Bombos vs. Everything
Someday's Dreamers: Spellbound

things I'll definitely pick up:

BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad volume 5
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad volume 6
GTO: The Early Years volume 2
Sgt. Frog volume 12

towards the middle of the section the printing gets a bit sketchy. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories was also profiled and is sure to be another hit for them just like the original. Throughout the magazine there are various articles such as an interview with the creator of Model, and the different types of kimonos you can find in their manga. Overall I found this issue to be quite enjoyable for a boring Saturday afternoon. The shortened page count also made it more readable. I'll look forward to the next issue but who knows if it'll ever come. If it's going to take them another 6 months for them to compile 3 already written previews and distribute them I don't have a very high outlook on the future existence of this magazine.

Q. What is Manga Magazine?

A. Manga Magazine was originally called Takuhai which is "delivered to your door" in Japanese. Tokyopop created it to basically spread word about their manga titles by delivering a free magazine with manga samples on a quarterly basis to the people who signed up for free on their website. Most of these titles sampled are original Tokyopop creations written by American authors. With the second issue they switched the name to Manga Magazine because Takuhai "was confusing." Manga Magazine has pretty much been in limbo for the majority of the year but popped up out of nowhere with their summer issue. Yes, it's free.

panic! at the wal-mart

I don't like to make fun of people, it's just so easy to. Today at Wal-mart this chubby mexican kid scanned the Cheetah Girls Soundtrack and was dancing and singing along to it bumping into everything in the aisle. More like mumbled/hummed I don't think he could speak English well.

The place promised in our early days.
05/05/06 at 07:09 PM by slickwataris
The cold wind gives of the smell of that day. The clouds are drifting fast and between them I can see the faded blue, like in an old photograph. The straight vapor trail that has just been drawn quietly melts away in the blue as if water has been mixed in. On a day like this, the place deep in my heart that I usually don't show to anyone slightly hurts. It's a pain that I usually pretend doesn't exist.

Because the world hid you from me a long, long time ago, I can't remember your face or your form very well. I feel that I made some sort of important promise with you one day. Since then, I've come through every day as if holding my breath, and now I realize I can't remember even that promise. I also don't even know if I'm standing in the right place right now. I'm cetain that I'll continue to lose you from now on as well.

But, I clearly remember your aura at least.

I remember how your voice echoed in the air.

I remember how your hair reflected the setting sun.

I remember how gentle your fingertips were.

I remember how you and the world were shining.

You know I hope that my voice will reach you no matter where you are in the world. I would like to become kind and strong. I hope my voice echoes in the air of the world and some day reaches you living somewhere. I hope so, no matter how far the world hides you from me. I hope so, as long as you are alive.

I can hear the sound of that day from the sun-baked rails. Within the wind that blows from far away, your breath is quietly mixed in. Beyond the clouds there is still the promised place from that day. Although I'm sure the world that we looked out upon from the green field was full of kindness in those days, I don't know since when but I am surrounded by solitude and holding a heart creaking under the strain. I'm certain that we'll continue to lose each other.

But your warmth continues to give me warmth.

I remember how precious the words that came from your lips were to me.

I remember how smoothly your fingernails reflected the sky.

I remember how much your back caused me to tremble.

I remember how much you and the world were full of mysteries.

You know, I pray that my song will reach you no matter where you are in the world. I would like to become kind and strong. I hope that our voices echo in the air of the world and that some day they reach the two of us who live far apart. I hope so, as long as we are alive.

flower on the precipice

We think a flower on a cliff is beautiful

because we stop our feet at the cliff's edge,

unable to step out into the sky

like that fearless flower.

Country Roads
04/03/06 at 04:52 PM by slickwataris
Almost heaven, west virginia
Blue ridge mountains, shenandoah river
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place, I be-long
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

All my mem’ries, gather ’round her
Miner’s lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye

Country roads, take me home
To the place, I be-long
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

I hear her voice, in the mornin’ hours she calls to me
The radio reminds me of my home far a-way
And drivin’ down the road I get a feeling’
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

Country roads, take me home
To the place, I be-long
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads
