Just Want My Credit
05/17/09 at 04:17 PM by Blake Solomon
I have a brief moment to reflect so I thought I'd do that. Yesterday was graduation day. I attended the honors ceremony outside on the quad in the shadow of the columns and it was definitely a neat experience. They gave me a bronze honors medal to go along with my Magna Cum Laude status. I know what you're thinking, I come across very stupid on these boards, but that's just because it's easier to type short words than it is to type complicated ones. Later in the day I scurried across the stage of the Journalism School's graduation and had lots of cheers from lots of good friends.

It's weird, because when you go to a school of 27,000 students, it's easy to think that you don't know anyone. But I must have cheered and congratulated a million people in that graduation that I knew or liked. It was a good feeling, indeed.

After the revelry of the past few days, my family and I were set with the task of moving out. My bedroom is now completely bare (and the clog in the sink is finally gone!). Tomorrow will be my last day in Columbia. I'm dreading it and very sad, but at the same time I'm drained and it's hard to feel anything. Unlike my cohorts who went to school in Texas, I'm extremely unsure of when I will see these people again. I'm terrible with keeping in touch, but hopefully I can change that during my time in Atlanta.

This was a good place to live. This was a good school. These were good people.

Smiles
05/12/09 at 10:10 AM by Blake Solomon
I'm smiling for two reasons

Reason #1: this ad's visual:

Reason #2: I just completed my undergraduate work at the University of Missouri. My last test had the essay question on it that I knew the best, and I did decent enough on the objective questions. Graduation and moving out is this weekend. I expect my Internet time to be limited, but this is a celebration!

Footpaths

Sherwood don't have many good songs, but "The Town That You Live In" is their rare exception. I listened to this song a lot when I came to college, and it's only fitting that I listen to it a lot while I'm leaving. Or at least while I'm leaving this college. Maybe it will bring you solace, too.

"The Town That You Live In"

I must say,
It's a nice day,
When the leaves start to turn, there is so much to learn from the freeway,
You're my friend,
For the weekend,
When the spring comes around, you can show me the town that you live in,

And tonight I walk through an empty street,
With my shadow stretching in front of me,
When my lonely thoughts meet my lonely feet,
And the cold reminds me that I've chosen this life,

I must say,
It's a nice day,
With the flowers in bloom, there is so much to view from the freeway,
And we're friends,
For the weekend,
And when the fall comes around, you can show me the town that you live in,

And tonight I walk through an empty street,
With my shadow stretching in front of me,
When my lonely thoughts meet my lonely feet,
And the cold reminds me that I've chosen this life,

So hang up the phone cause you're probably better alone,
So hang up the phone cause you're probably better alone,
So hang up the phone cause you're probably better alone,

And tonight I walk through an empty street,
With my shadow stretching in front of me,
When my lonely thoughts meet my lonely feet,
And the cold reminds me that I've,

And tonight I walk through an empty street,
With my shadow stretching in front of me,
When my lonely thoughts meet my lonely feet,
And the cold reminds me that I've chosen this life,

goodnight. BLAKE

Studying for your last test ever is hard. My motivation is at record lows. How do you cope with situations like this one? Any and all help is appreciated.

The song "Los Angeles" by The Audition is near perfect. Not perfect enough to be part of my new "Perfect Song" series, but still, it rules

Catch My Eye Vol. 17
05/07/09 at 02:09 PM by Blake Solomon
Here is a campaign that makes you think, "How has this NOT been done before?" It's so simple and transparent that it seems like a first-thought. But somehow, it wasn't. And now, here I am saying, "I would have a job already if I came up with this."

The Assassination of Dow Jones
05/06/09 at 01:13 PM by Blake Solomon
So here I am, done. After 15 weeks and countless hours (well, more like 80 hours), my advertising campaign/presentation is over. Our presentation yesterday to the bigwigs of Lutheran Senior Services could not have gone better. It was more than just a moral victory, no, this was a victory for level-headed, intelligent thought processes. Taking research seriously and listening to those who know very closely can get you very far in this world.

One day I'll do this for real and I'll (maybe) get paid for it. Today's Wednesday, which usually means a group meeting with Steve or a Legacy check-up session. But today there will be none of that. Today I celebrate by watching television in attempt to let my mind rest before one last final and another big move.

It's been a whirlwind, and I don't just mean this semester. Is it too cliche to broaden that statement to, "Life is a whirlwind?" Who cares, it's the truth.

Hey, look at me, being all peaceful and whatnot.

My copy of Reach For The Sun arrived today! Packaging looks great and I now have a new TDS sticker to put on my dresser (which has a side dedicated to band stickers).

This is also your reminder to check out The Dangerous Summer and to buy the album tomorrow if you haven't preordered it.

Perfect Songs: Tiger Mountain Peasant Song
05/01/09 at 10:01 PM by Blake Solomon
If there's one thing this blog needs, it's more "series" posts. So that my Catch My Eye posts won't be lonely, I now have the Perfect Song posts. It's simple, really, in these posts I'll highlight a song that, in my opinion, couldn't possibly be better. We'll start with Fleet Foxes and their song "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song." Look below for some links/vid/whatever.

BLAKE

---------------------

(them live)

(cover of some hot european women playing it)

LyricsWanderers this morning came by
Where did they go
Graceful in the morning light
To banner fair
To follow you softly
In the cold mountain air

Through the forest
Down to your grave
Where the birds wait
And the tall grasses wave
They do not
know you anymore

Dear shadow alive and well
How can the body die
You tell me everything
Anything true

In the town one morning I went
Staggering through premonitions of my death
I don't see anybody that dear to me

Dear shadow alive and well
How can the body die
You tell me everything
Anything true

Jesse
I don't know what I have done
I'm turning myself to a demon
I don't know what I have done
I'm turning myself to a demon

Catch My Eye Vol. 16
04/28/09 at 01:08 PM by Blake Solomon
Depending on how close you live to an 8-lane highway, you may or may not see fantastic outdoor advertising everyday. If you're me, and live in between a corn field and a bigger corn field, you see none. Personally, I love the stuff. I think creating an eye-catching ad at 70 MPH is a feat not to be passed over lightly. So if you get one that's good, hold tight and keep it until a client, any client, approves the idea.

Here's one I love. It's for Law & Order re-runs being shown on some foreign cable network:

Great use of all available media

A Good Thing
04/28/09 at 12:42 AM by Blake Solomon
I just read a bunch of blog entries from my time in London. And now I'm listening to my favorite songs from that period.

And now I am very, very sad.

BLAKE

Fight It OutSomedays you see me and realize that this was a good thing. Be happy. Amaze me. I must admit we both acted crazy. And somedays, I still love you. And somedays, you're my biggest enemy. And I'll try to save you. I think I'm the one who needs saving.

Audition
04/25/09 at 12:10 AM by Blake Solomon
I like the new Audition record. Other than a couple "Honest, We aren't Nickelback" moments, it's a solid, catchy record. "Los Angeles" is defintely a fun song, as is the opener "The Running Man." This comes out on Tuesday, I'd say pick it up.

Cleverly Wasteful
04/22/09 at 01:22 PM by Blake Solomon
Some European ad agency had award season on their minds and created a guerilla campaign about saving water or something. The trick is, you have to pour water on it to read and it says something about knowledge or probably existentialism. Seems clever, right. But remember, to see it, you have to literally pour water down the drain for no other reason than to see the "genius" of these creatives. Link is via Copyranter.
