Currently streaming the new Circa Survive "Violent Waves". This album was recorded without the backing of a record label, which seems to be the trend with alot of bands as of late. I don't mind this album, but my favorite album they released is easily On Letting Go. I know alot of people here will agree, and I'm not a bandwagoner. The album is just spectacular. This latest album is missing a few key attributes that were abundant in On Letting Go and Blue Sky Noise. I feel that this album harnesses each members musical influences, but it is a step backwards. Maybe not backwards, but I feel that their music is headed in a slightly different direction. To the left I think. I'm having flashbacks of listening to Brand New's Daisy for the first time and thinking to myself, "WTF is this Shit?" But that album grew on me, and I appreciate their experimenting. I really hope this album grows on me, and I can't wait to purchase the hard copy.
The musical quality of the album is good, but it lacks the diversity and independence that OLG had, which is what makes it one of my favorite albums of all time. "I'll Find A Way" is the closest thing I've heard so far that touches the former sound and energy, but this album initially comes off as boring, and emotionless. Which, I feel, is the reason why there are so many mixed reviews. I am disappointed with this release because its not what I expected from Circa, but I'm not giving up on it yet.
If any AP Users know of any bands similar to Circa, please let me know. Or if you have any suggestions, I'm always looking for new music, and I know there's alot of gems that slip past my recognition.
