|The Brother, A Struggler
|There once was a little girl named Lauren.|
She had an older brother named Arthur.
Her four person family was foreign,
and her older brother wasn’t like the others.
Lauren’s friends all had older brothers
who protected their sisters from others
But Lauren’s older brother bugged her/
But never, ever in front of their mother.
Lauren remembers, when they were younger,
Every Christmas, cameras would flash pictures
under the tree of Lauren and Arthur.
While Lauren kept wishing she had sisters.
Arthur hurt Lauren more than ever,
physically and emotionally. She cried
while he laughed and thought he was clever.
Lauren would look in the mirror or hide,
she’d hide from the tears and all her fears.
Hide from her mother and her brother.
She just kept listening to her peers.
They all promised her that someday he’d love her.
Years went by and the children got older,
places changed more than the seasons,
and their relationship got colder.
Lauren could never find the true reason.
She kept asking herself why things were this way
and wondering why Arthur never seemed to care.
He only knocked her down and knew exactly what to say.
All this while, she was living in despair.
Then slowly thoughts flooded her mind.
Is this making me stronger? Can I really survive?
Nobody could ever damage her this time.
That’s when little Lauren started feeling alive.
She started adding figures up
And realized that this relationship
(Or lack thereof) caused her to build up
a tough outer layer that no one could rip.
Arthur went far away to college
and Lauren finally understood that
the reason she was put on this voyage,
was that “Arthur thought that she could”.
He wanted to build that outer layer strong,
he wanted to protect her but not let her hang on,
he wanted all for the best yet did it wrong.
He accomplished his goal but they still don’t get along.
