An Ode To No One
2010: The Year of Indie
01/21/10 at 11:57 AM by Mike Kraft
These are 3 albums that I've received this past week and have really enjoyed, having had some time to allow them to sit and ferment. Any indie fan that hasn't heard of these bands, really should look into them. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Past Lives - Tapestry of Webs (Suicide Squeeze Records)

Created with 3 former members of The Blood Brothers, Past Lives, created "an album that crawls from the primordial ooze of anti-parent culture sound to stand on newly formed legs, moving forward with carefully considered steps. Here, sibling harmonies are offered to The Wickerman death-dub, tom-toms locked in hypnotic BPM. Guitars alternate between glistening pop tones, ethereal bliss-out and raw rhythmic ruin. Throughout, each song delves deep into the blank gaze, the experience of everyday living as viewed through the tired eyes of uncertainty and doubt. It's all kinda 'vibey'."

Peasant - Shady Retreat (Paper Garden Records)

"Shady Retreat, Peasantís new record, takes off where the previous record, On The Ground, left us. While the last album gave many people their first taste of Peasant, in the eyes of the monikerís human form, Damien DeRose, this was a mere appetizer to what would soon come to fruition. DeRose molded his own retrospective thoughts and realization about the music and content of On The Ground to use as a platform for Shady Retreat. The result is an album that is an extension of the most creative and substantial elements of On The Ground combined with DeRoseís maturing music tastes and everyday influences. Shady Retreat stands out as its own introspective artistic masterpiece."

Emanuel and the Fear - Listen (Paper Garden Records)

"Often times, a band can get too big too quickly and not be able to adapt in ample time to their own success. In Emanuel and the Fearís case, they started big - an entire 11 members big. With less than a year under their belt since the initial self-titled EP release, Emanuel and the Fear has been building its profile and reputation rapidlly, proving to the industry and fans alike that it is one band that is worth the hype."

First Impression: Set Your Goals
07/12/09 at 07:09 AM by Mike Kraft

Set Your Goals
This Will Be The Death Of Us
Epitaph Records

I gave this album a real true listen yesterday and was instantly hooked. I just couldn't stop spinning it. To quote from Drew's review; "the twelve track album is like Power Rangers Ė the tracks are awesome individually, but become unstoppable when listened to together." From beginning to end, this album is explosive, balls to the wall, pop-punk. This is definately a great follow-up to Mutiny!. The guest vocals of Vinne Caruana (I am the Avalanche/The Movielife), Hayley Williams (Paramore) and Chad Gilbert (New Found Glory) are stellar and make for a great blend like that of a bourbon and coke; sweet with a bite. I suggest pre-ordering it.

Pony Pony Run Run
Pony Pony Run Run
3eme Bureau/WAGRAM

For the fans of Phoenix and/or Weezer, Pony Pony Run Run are a great power pop, electro rock band from France. They are becoming the next big thing in France, as they are being play-listed by all the major indie/rock radio stations. Check out the video and enjoy.

Recommendation: Jukebox The Ghost
06/17/09 at 10:13 AM by Mike Kraft

Jukebox The Ghost
Let Live & Let Ghosts
Rebel Group Records

Excerpt from OhMyRockness.comDC's Jukebox the Ghost are an extremely entertaining piano-pop trio that writes cleverly optimistic songs. Their music gives off an aura that vaguely resembles happiness. Imagine! Upon first listen to these guys you will probably think two things (depending on how in touch with the '90s you are); "Ben" and "Folds." It's true that singer/piano player Ben Thornewill shares strong vocal similarities to that other Ben's tenor. And, of course, it doesn't quell comparisons when they're both piano men. But Jukebox the Ghost probably lean a little more towards the dramatic flair (a la Queen) than Folds did (or does?). People go crazy for these guys at their shows. Maybe you will, too?

Recommendation: Matt and Kim

Matt and Kim
Grand
Popfrenzy Records

Recommended by a friend (actually just listened to it in his car), this album is a favorite after only one listen. They are fun, energetic, and catchy as hell.

Excerpt from OhMyRockness.comThink of their songs as the soundtrack to slow motion summer montage; grinning guys and gals engaged in silly horseplay... a water fight, maybe, full of giggles and romps through sprinklers. Or something like that. This band will leave you feeling good and rocked.

Recommendation: Third Eye Blind
04/24/09 at 08:02 PM by Mike Kraft
3EB. This band brings back some ultimate memories. I can tell you exactly where I was, how old I was, and what I was doing the first time I heard the single "Semi-Charmed Life". Pure nostalgia at best. Times were so much better back then. If I only knew half what I know now back then....

Away by Third Eye Blind lyricsWell I take it all back this belovedness
And I won't kneel down to confess
But I'm in lack of awe from this tenderness
Still concealed even though I undress you
She says "shut up, you talk to much,
It's all in your head, com'on just touch me"
But in my bed this whole thing plays
And I can feel it, no matter what she says
I feel it going and some day I know she's going

Away
This will come and this will go
Away
And no one needs to tell you so
It's either you or it's me
One of us will always be
The first to walk away
To Walk Away

Well I hold you down 'til you say when
I thought we were all just friends
But feelings, they sink into the skin
I thought we would just be bound in
But I forgot what we were
And I know some day I'll send her

Away
This will come and this will go
Away
No one needs to tell you so
It's either you or it's me
One of us will always be
The first to walk away

I feel you when I'm alone
I, I can't hear from you on my own
Stay Away........
Stay Away........

Well I guess it's best to leave enough alone
I didn't say a word when I drove you home
So sad that things turn out this way
Some day I'll drive this road alone
Silence here with the engine humming
She sheds a tear for the time to come
Maybe we're over but we're not done
Maybe we're over but we're not done

Away
This will come and this will go
Away
No one needs to tell you so
It's either you or it's me
One of us will always be
The first to walk away

I'll always know (away)
We always go
The first to walk away
Just walk away

For the record, I think Twilight is horrible. I couldn't make it past the 4:35 mark, both times I tried to watch it.

First Impression: hockey
04/22/09 at 05:23 PM by Mike Kraft
I don't mean the sport. Though, yes, you should be watching the playoffs (go Ducks!), this is about the band hockey. These Portland, OR, boys will be the next big thing that hits AP. Jump on and enjoy the ride. The sound varies from track to track but continually resembles LCD Soundsystem and The Strokes. I can see many of these tracks being spun in those indie-hipster clubs in L.A.; not that that's a bad thing. Exposure is exposure.

Recommendation: The Injured List
03/29/09 at 08:01 AM by Mike Kraft
These Ann Arbor, Michigan, area boys are causing quite a stir. They are giving away their debut There's Always Next Year free through AP.net, which made it a big hit with many of the members. Now, it seems that every where you turn Anton is namedropping the band. And rightfully so! These guys are like a nice tall glass of lemonade on a hot day, refreshing and crisp. The lyrics have a personal touch that make them easy to relate to. Clear, distinct vocals make it easy to understand, yet, still, the instruments bring the power behind it, without it, well, being overpowering. These guys have found a very special place amongst our little community and we hope they stick around. Why don't you help them out and give them a listen.

The Injured List - Crazy

Crazy by The Injured List lyricsI'm sick of waking up and wondering where I'm going
Cause everything is flying by and nothing's slowing down
And I can't do a thing to stop it
What happened to the day when I could still breathe easy
Never worry about what's coming & who could be leaving me
Back when I still knew what I wanted
Now I can't go a second without second guessing
Every single thing I'm doing
My head's not letting up on me
And I don't know what to do

Hey Sasha, where are you
I need you to tell me that I'm not going crazy
To tell me that I'm not going crazy
And Kasey, I need you to tell me
That everything is gonna be okay
That everything is gonna be okay

I've lived in my regrets as long as I can remember
And now all that I can think about is how I let her down
And Kate, I hope you know I'm sorry
There's so much going on right now I can't think straight
All I do is try & wish all of my memories away
But that only makes them worse
Now I can't go a second without second guessing
Every single thing I'm doing
My head's not letting up on me
And I don't know what to do

Hey Sasha, where are you
I need you to tell me that I'm not going crazy
To tell me that I'm not going crazy
And Kasey, I need you to tell me
That everything is gonna be okay
That everything is gonna be okay

I just want to be able to say,
I didn't sleep away the day
But I can't keep my head up
And I can't make my mind erase
All the years, all the places
All the tears and names and faces
And it's time for me to face the fact
They're gone and never coming back again
They're gone

Hey Sasha, where are you
I need you to tell me that I'm not going crazy
To tell me that I'm not going crazy
And Kasey, I need you to tell me
That everything is gonna be okay
That everything is gonna be okay
And Kate, I hope you know I'm sorry
And Kate, I hope you know I'm sorry
And Kate, I hope you know I'm sorry

Hey Sasha, where are you
I need you to tell me that I'm not going crazy
To tell me that I'm not going crazy

The Injured List - Lost!

Lost! by The Injured List lyricsHold that thought
Of holding your breath til you hit the floor
Running as if your life counted on
Every mile you put between us
Just don't look back when you don't hear me
Following you back to the same place you go
Every time you give up

Cause time is running out even faster than you
Can't count on forever when it's counting too
Down to the second that we always knew
Was better than never, but not soon enough
To let me in
Let me in

Before I'm gone and leave you asking
Why another good thing's passed you by
Why you had to go and push away
Someone else who may not be the one
But at least they're there

Cause time is running out even faster than you
Can't count on forever when it's counting too
Down to the second that we always knew
Was better than never, but not soon enough
To let you breathe
Let you breathe

Better than never, but a second too late
You can't run through life pushing others away
Or you'll end up lost and on your own someday
Someday

Cause time is always running out faster than you
Keep playing this game someday it will play you
Won't even know what you missed out on
And won't ever get back time or the people you lost
You lost

The Injured List - Sure Things

Sure Things by The Injured List lyricsI don't need this
What can I say
We both knew all of this was pointless
I like how you say that I would be the one thing you'd miss
And when it counts you can't remember I exist
And when you can you push me out of your head

What I don't know won't hurt me
So I don't want to know you anymore
And I try to remember all the good times
But I can't look past the door
That you left open when you walked out
Now I realize
That I don't need you

I can't remember if I ever did
I might've tried before but now I quit
If I ever cared is now irrelevant
Cause you're as dead to me now
As before we even met

What I don't know won't hurt me
So I don't want to know you anymore
And I try to remember all the good times
But I can't look past the door
That you left open when you walked out

Now I've found
I'm running short on sure things
I just wanted a little bit of certainty
I wanted to know, if nothing else
That this one thing would turn out
Just the way it was supposed to be
But now I've lost it and it won't come back
Cause I won't let it
I won't let it take control of me again
Again

What I don't know won't hurt me
So I don't want to know you anymore
And I try to remember all the good times
But I can't look past the door
That you left open when you walked out
Now I'm over you
That's for sure

These three tracks are my favorite standout tracks from the album.

Recommendation: The Constellation Branch
03/28/09 at 07:44 AM by Mike Kraft

I found these four, Phoenix, Arizona, musicians while perusing the wonderful feature Nathan Lint puts together for us, every Friday. Free Music Friday. The Constellation Branch are giving away their debut album, The Dream Life, The Real Life, The Empty GlassÖ. It's worth checking out. If you're a fan of Radiohead, At The Drive-In, Cursive, and/or mewithoutYou, I highly suggest them. Taking them over a year to record, you can tell they worked hard putting this album together and didn't skip over the little details.

Recommendation: Northstar
03/23/09 at 08:00 AM by Mike Kraft

Is This Thing Loaded? by Northstar lyricsThere's something about a morning without the picture perfect ribbons in her hair
It's raining, she knows that she wants to let me in

Cause my dear I can't breathe out here
It's cold so tell me why
I break to pieces for hopeless reasons
Stereo therapy heals my lesions

Do you know what it's like to hurt at night for oh no reason?
Do you know what it's like?

So forget the feelings so few have
She says I love you to death
And forget the feelings so few have
Forget our future we don't have

Four-flush and forget I make you feel like a harlot, does he know I'm here?
So please dear untie me before we drive that awful extra mile
And at night I dream about that smile
And the jealousy that's gleaming on our teeth
There's something about a morning without that perfect picture...

Do you know what it's like to hurt at night for oh no reason?
Do you know what it's like?

So forget the feelings so few have
She says I love you to death
And forget the feelings so few have
---- you and the future we don't have

So forget the feelings so few have
She says I love you to death
And forget the feelings so few have
---- you and the future we don't have

Rigged And Ready by Northstar lyricsIt's winter and I'm late I lost this game
Of white Russian roulette but I'm fine I'm quite ok,
And she knows I'm royal loyal to lovers
I'll die here with you when my veins lose their hue

Cause I never fixed my broken jaw
That's why my words don't ever come out at all,
So when you come out fix another for me
One hand's itching the other's missing
I wish I was missing...

Birthmarked my arms in vain out my mouth and down the drain
Shooting bullets through my blood, the bullets barely missed my brain
And fly for five days around my bedroom in a haze
And then I'll crash straight in the ground
I wish I was never ever here...

And I don't know what's buried here
(I think) I'm buried here and barely here...

Raccoon eyed and skin whiter than heavens best fighter
I'm thinking she needs me, well do you girl? I guess we'll see
And I know she's perfect, a hostage in purple
We'll tie up our arms with my cancer and your charm

Cause I'll never kiss a broken jaw
Fist fight the light that bounces off my walls
So when you come out fix another for me
One leg's limping, the other's missing
I wish I was missing...

Dodging broken down satellites
Mending my beaten up jaw line
Last night I stayed on call all night
And I watched her die three times tonight

Recommendation: The Receiving End of Sirens
03/18/09 at 12:24 PM by Mike Kraft
I was going to post about another artist that I feel deserves the attention, but since I've seen the love they've garnered today from their fans, I feel that it's only deserving to hand off my recommendation to The Receiving End of Sirens. Hard to believe it's been a year already. Here's 4 different videos for you guys. Also, thanks to everyone that reads this daily. It's only because of you guys I've managed to hit 10,000 views. Keep checking back for a surprise for everyone.

Planning A Prison Break by The Receiving End of Sirens lyricsWarden's calling for a lockdown, baby
He'll call on interim inequities
This is the last night in my body;
Assist in the escape
Warden's calling on a jailbreak, baby
He'll fly like only a jailbird could
He'll fly like only a jailbird could

Like a felon, he fell into scandals,
Scams, and master plans
To circumvent all circumstances
He thought to his throat,
"We can swallow this key and leave when we please"
Let's hope this stomach, stomach
Let's hope this stomach disagrees

Warden's calling for a lockdown, baby
He'll call on interim inequities
This is the last night in my body;
Assist in the escape
Warden's calling on a jailbreak, baby
He'll fly like only a jailbird could
He'll fly like only a jailbird could

"Make a clean getaway," he said,
With his hands outstretched
To nurse her neck
She lured him in with a masochistic kiss
And he wished he could be anywhere, be anywhere but here

Warden's calling for a lock down, baby
He'll call on interim inequities
This is the last night in my body;
Assist in the escape
Warden's calling on a jailbreak, baby
He'll fly like only a jailbird could
He'll fly like only a jailbird could

Arm (he could be anywhere)
in arm we walk (but here, but here)
outside (he could be anywhere)
so that all we've done was not in vain. (but here, but here)

Warden's calling for a lock down, baby
He'll call on interim inequities
This is the last night in my body;
So assist in the escape
Warden's calling on a jailbreak, baby
He'll fly like only a jailbird could
He'll fly like only a jailbird could

Warden's calling for a lock down, baby (Somehow,)
He'll call on interim inequities (for now,)
This is the last night in my body; (this skin will have to do.)
So assist in the escape
Warden's calling on a jailbreak, baby (Somehow,)
He'll fly like only a jailbird could (for now,)
He'll fly like only a jailbird could (this skin will have to do.)

This is the last night in my body, yeah.

Smoke and Mirrors by The Receiving End of Sirens lyricsHook, line and sinker
Your smoke and mirrors
Won't ever take the bait
I'll never fall for those formats and figures
Your greedy fingers won't ever get their hands on me

The wolves wear the wool
Of the sheep the have fooled
And preach their code of conduct:
"You've gotta push that, push that product"
We'll live in fear, for coats they may sheer
The fleecing of a fleeting flock
You may have my wool
You may have my locks
But my voice you have not
My voice you have not
We're sitting ducks, with feathers plucked

You hide your fangs so cleverly dear
You sing your songs so prettily

I'll never fall for the
Hook line and sinker
Your smoke and mirrors
I wont ever take the bait
I'll never fall for those
Formats and figures
Your greedy fingers
Won't ever get their hands on me

Hey boy, you best look out
"Ooh, we'll have you."
Pay mind to those greedy people climbers
They're licking their lips at you
They'll crush and they'll claw
Their way to the top
Your legs are just ladders to them
Your head's just another step man
On you like a rash
On you like a rash

I'll never fall for the
Hook line and sinker
Your smoke and mirrors
I wont ever take the bait
I'll never fall for those
Formats and figures
Your greedy fingers
Won't ever get their hands on me

Even though you hide your fangs so cleverly dear
You sing you songs so prettily dear
Your most gentle call
Your most soothing song won't lead this sheep astray

All these suits with big black lives
Can't put me on the company's dime
I won't be bought
No I won't be sold

All these greasy palms and greedy hands
All my supply all your demand
I'm not you whore
And I won't be your Babylon

This Armistice by The Receiving End of Sirens lyricsYour gross fabrication of pretense could bore,
Yet still I fall victim to syntax omitted,
Just shy of something I could understand
So blissful, I press on to the sound of the organs
Playing their most convincing tunes
As they serenade to the parade of paid-off parts

And now the only thing left to discuss is
The details of this armistice
We've come to this agreement...

Check my vitals
The truth is vile, but vital to this cause
I've been held hostage;
A captive of this passive shell
Give me gravity, give me clarity,
Give me something to rely on

We're all puppets (Tell me who's pulling the strings)
We're all marionettes
We're all puppets (Tell me who's that you move for)
We're all marionettes

These body parts are parts of plans,
Passed by my hands
My hands shake through handshakes,
Forsaken by my limbs
My limbs sing the hymns;
The hymns of a tyrant in a crumbling pantheon
As inhabitants will raise their fists and bid him to disarm

Check my vitals
The truth is vile, but vital to this cause
I've been held hostage;
A captive of this passive shell
Give me gravity, give me clarity,
Give me something to rely on

We're all puppets (Tell me who's pulling the strings)
We're all marionettes
We're all puppets (Tell me who's that you move for)
We're all marionettes
[x2]

And now the only thing left to discuss is
The details of this armistice
We've come to this agreement...

Oh, how I've been teething (Tell me who's pulling the strings)
In light of your misleading
You've caused this collapse (Tell me who's that you move for)
Between the heart and the synapse
[x2]

[Previous stanza continues in the background]
We're all puppets
We're all marionettes
We're all puppets
We're all marionettes
[x2]

[Whispered]
...The strings and joints will join us together...
The strings and joints will join us
The strings and joints will join us together...

Saturnus by The Receiving End of Sirens lyricsI've got this little itch that I never learned to scratch
It seems that even if I had, I'd rather itch than not
When the pleasure is the lesser and it's giving to the pressure
Of an ever growing lust and an always present want

All this is yours so here's your piece of it, your part in it
Clench your jaws
With claws, you'll strangle it, you'll smother it
Damn right, I want nothing to do with this
No part of it

Fight to death to keep it
This mere fondling is mine
(It's the subtlest of snares)
I've cared so much with proving that I've lost all love for proof
An ever growing craving for a quickly fading feel
(It's the subtlest of snares)
I'd trade my soul for a great big hole and a heart too hard to heal

All this is yours so here's your piece of it, your part in it
Clench your jaws
With claws, you'll strangle it, you'll smother it
Damn right, I want nothing to do with this
No part of it
Keep locked your jaws
I hope you choke on it

The craving grows
Fiercer and fiercer it grows

My heart is ringing out of tune
My heart is ringing out of tune
My heart is calling out for you

I'm first to thirst and the last to drink
Of the words I've heard but rarely think
Forget my heart has gone to hell
I have found the well and it's mine, all mine

If Tragedy's Appealing Then Disaster's An Addiction by Moneen lyricsA tragedy's appealing
Disaster an addiction
Waiting for the good in everything
While the world keeps failing

There's safety in this distance
There's pain in entertainment
Waiting for the good in everything
While the world keeps failing

Consistent
With these problems
I'm not a failure now
I'm not a failure now

Anxiety's misleading
It's kosher, yet revealing
Waiting for the good in everything
While the world keeps failing

And shine a light down on this
And shine a light down on
everyone and everything we see
While the world keeps failing

Consistent
With these problems
I'm not a failure now
I'm not a failure now
I'm not a failure

You wonder why
And realize what we're made of
Afraid of

Afraid of (In light of everything)
Afraid of (In spite of everything)
Afraid of failing, failing now

Tonight, I'm Gone... by Moneen lyricsToo late tonight, I'm gone
and you're miles ahead and I'm lost.
Throughout this darkened scene,
their skies are what I dream.
The light resides in lines,
offset in different times.
And I'm blinded by a sea
of this strange memory.
Frames change and I'm still lost.
scene stills lay still in this fog,
and I try only to see straight into through you.
Your eyes become so bare, an eager empty stare.
And I'm blinded by a sea of this strange memory.
And I am...and I see.. it's just me.
And I drift quietly through the thick of trees leaves.
My mind slowly separates from my body.
Days late and I'm not around now.. I don't care.
Dreamscapes escape all my thoughts. Awake.
I dream of a fate I cannot escape, now it's too late.
Time dies in straight lines.
Waiting, and I can't take anything,
I try to believe everything, but I can't.
Follow me again, out from everything.
The dark that I dreamt are all lies I have meant...

Recommedation: Little Brazil
03/16/09 at 01:21 PM by Mike Kraft
Here's a teaser video for you:

Now It's Time - Little Brazil (Will open in new window)

Now It's Time by Little Brazil lyricsNow it's time
Count your losses and move on
Pull your collar up
Face the long walk home

Cause' you've seen
The bright shining lights
A pause at every part
A barter will come

And you know
You'll never see those lights again
Once was memory, soon fantasy, now just an old vague dream

You try to tell yourself:
"Hell, it was worth it
Because it feels totally great"
Do you remain this giving end?
So what do you do
To make you feel what you're saying?

Just simmer down
Just simmer down
And I tried so
To trade my effort for your happiness
It just seems like you're waiting to be sick of me already

You're away today
With your family
Still the phone hasn't rang
This is probably the break you wanted to never end

I just thought you felt the same way
So now what will you say?
Baby, I cant do this again
I'm saying, all the pictures wont work
I'm sorry, I'm out of cans
Now it seems like you acted good around your friends
Secretly hiding whatever this mess, yeah

Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, Little Brazil was formed in 2002 while, frontman, Landon Hedges was on a break from playing with Desaparecidos (Conor Oberst) and The Good Life (Tim Kasher). Little Brazil draws influences from the likes of Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, and Built To Spill. You might have even seen them open for Tegan & Sara, Nada Surf, Tapes 'n Tapes, Cursive, The Appleseed Cast, and many others. Little Brazil are making a name for themselves in the indie scene. The question is, will you be a part of it?

Their latest album, Son, will be released March 24.
