Anyone a Secret Regular Expression Genius?
01/23/10 at 05:34 PM by Jason Tate
I suck at regex/preg_match. Anyone know how to grab everything before the colon in this string (using php)?

iwantthis: askjdkalsdjaklsdjaslkdjaslkdasdas.

So that all I get is the "iwantthis" portion of it?

Does This Gadget Exist?
01/22/10 at 08:55 AM by Jason Tate
Does a device exist that I can plug into my TV (downstairs) - and it will allow me to watch/listen to files that are on my computer (avi, divx, xvid, mpg, mp3, etc.) upstairs?

A Daily Update
09/30/09 at 09:25 AM by Jason Tate
It looks like Blake is posting news this morning (what a bad ass), sooooo ... I think I'm gonna try and get some stuff done around the website for a few hours. Installed Windows 7 on this system yesterday - and so far I am really liking it. There's some changes from Vista (which I still maintain gets far more shit than it deserves) and I love the new taslkbar. For what I do on a daily basis, I maintain a Windows' OS gives me more of what I need for how I use a system. So that's why I use it for my primary OS more than others. I think Apple has a good UI, but there are some things that drive me nuts: I don't like how they handle having multiple programs/windows open at a time, it doesn't work right on the dock for quickly finding what I need and moving between programs. And I hate that clicking the close button on a window means I still have to go to the title bar at the top to "really close it" -- minor things, but when I am using a computer for 85% of my waking life ... minor things add up.

So ... basically, from my first day with the new OS, I am into it -- I'll let you know more as things come up.

I've slowly been updating my contacts lists in gMail. This is something I should have done a looooong time ago. But now with over 2,000 contacts, I figured I should try and organize them the best I can. Mainly trying to keep people in groups the best I can for quick emailing ... we'll see how that all works out.

I'm Sorry
06/03/09 at 11:28 AM by Jason Tate
I want to apologize to everyone for all of the issues with AP.net lately. I know the website has been running extremely slow and having some technical issues. At the moment there is not a whole lot I can do about it - we're working on it constantly to alleviate the problems. It's hopefully just a matter of time until we can fix it permanently.

Faster Wireless
11/10/08 at 09:54 PM by Jason Tate
I got my new wireless router today. After having been connected at 50mbps for the past few years - installing the new card and moving up to "N" speed (I have no idea how they determine what letter to use) - I am blazing fast at a 270mbps wireless connection. So far so good! All my old devices work with it and it fits perfectly in the bed room and allows a strong wireless signal even in the side yard.

Well worth it.

Little Techno Nerd Stuff
11/06/08 at 01:03 PM by Jason Tate
Decided it was time to upgrade the wireless connection in my house. We've been using G for a while around here -- and one of the first incarnations of it. I've noticed some problems with it recently, especially the USB wireless card for my desktop computer. It'll drop into low speeds much more frequently. So, I decided to upgrade -- and picked up:

Linksys WRT150N Wireless-N Home Router
and a new card:
Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network Adapter, WUSB600N

Grabbed them off Amazon, so I hope to have them next week. I definitely felt it was time to upgrade the old network around here --seeing as it's my job and all, it helps to make sure we're at least sort of up to date.

Felt like sharing. I don't know why.

GMail for Mobile 2.0 launched last night - being the dork that I am, I downloaded it almost immediately.

Canned Responses + OCD
10/22/08 at 02:31 PM by Jason Tate
Loving the Google Labs addition of "canned responses" on GMail. This definitely helps me and my insane quest to keep my email answered in a timely fashion.

I also noticed another function of my OCD this morning. When I set the volume on my stereo, tv, car, etc., it has to be set to a number that feels right ... usually ending in a 5 or 0. I can't stand it being at 31, for example. I'm weird.

Tech Tip: New Google Maps
10/13/08 at 10:10 AM by Jason Tate
The new version of Google Maps for the Blackberry was released this weekend (or, at least, that's when I found out about it). It's one of the coolest (free) programs out there. Find restaurants near by, directions home -- and the new version lets you pick between driving/walking/transit directions to your destination. It also includes "street view" for getting really damn technical.

I've talked about Hulu.com (free TV streaming) a bunch in my blog and people will sometimes complain about it being US only ... well, here's the fix.

Tech Tip: Convert Streaming Video to Mp3
07/30/08 at 05:07 PM by Jason Tate
Found this website [via Lifehacker] that allows you to grab the audio from any streaming online video - and download it as an mp3. Pretty cool feature - worth mentioning for music fans.

Gmail and Windows.
07/07/08 at 04:39 PM by Jason Tate
Use Gmail as your primary email client and want to have all the "send to" links and right click links in Windows use Gmail instead of opening up Outlook or something?

gAttach is what you need.

Outside the US
05/31/08 at 11:44 AM by Jason Tate
I've seen a lot of people complain when we post about content that is US only (MTV links, etc.) - I recently came across this program that will solve that issue. If you're outside of the US - this will help.
