Buddy from Senses Fail posted a message on Facebook asking what it is that upsets people so much about him speaking out for LBGTQ rights.
What is it that upsets people so much about me (Buddy Nielsen) speaking up about LGBTQ rights? I am generally interested to hear what it is that bothers people so much about it? I identify as Queer and recently came out, I feel the need to raise awareness about the shame and silence I stayed in for 25 years. This is a band fronted by someone who is not straight. I cannot separate my music from internally who I am and am not willing to. The rights of other LGBTQ people are very important to me.
I don't want others to have to suffer the way I did....
For over 9 years I suffered in a cycle of shame over my sexuality, substance abuse, sexual addiction, anxiety, depression, grief and self loathing. I fell into a pit of despair and did a lot of damage to myself and to people around me. Through most of it I kept a pretty clean and convincing sheet over the messiness of my life, which in turn caused even more pain. I did a lot of things that were very dangerous and put myself into situations where I was putting myself and others at risk Over the coarse of the last year I have been able to find a level of...
Read a new Noisey article with Buddy Nielsen of Senses Fail on the band's legacy, past, and present.
By the time Let it Enfold You, the band’s proper debut, had been released by Vagrant records in 2004, Senses Fail had gone, as Nielson puts it, from being a “shitty band from New Jersey” to the upper echelon of the Warped Tour set, playing “late-night TV shows and arenas,” which came with all the pluses (Fans! Stardom!) and minuses (Being called a sell-out! Having dumb hair!) that a sudden rise entailed. “You looked around and you were like, ‘This is 80s metal!’ These guys are wearing makeup, you’re out here on tour with Jared Leto who’s a fucking movie star, you’re fucked up, doing wild...
Senses Fail will celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the release of their second full-length album, Let It Enfold You, by issuing the album on three colors of vinyl on September 9, 2014. More information can be found in the replies.
In response to some of the post regarding Nelson Mandela, I felt the need to write this. I am fully aware of all the facets that made this man who he was. In each of us there are qualities of both light and dark, negative and positive. At the end of our lives it is the total sum of both that make our legacy and create our karma. Intentions, right intention, play a large part in making our karmic experience. When looking at history, when judging human existence it is important to take the whole package and considered all of the parts. It is very easy to call him a terrorist, it is even easier to call him a hero, it is...
Over a decade in now and Senses Fail still deliver one hell of a live show. Here’s a band that really helped anchor our scene back in 04, and they’re still dominating today. Talk about seasoned professionals. And man can Buddy Nielsen scream his lungs out. If you can scream a song in Spanish (“Mi Amor”) and not miss a note, while still getting the crowd going while, I think you’re doing something exactly right. All the classics, from “Shark Attack” to “Lady in a Blue Dress” and the final “187,” sound even better ten years later, as Nielsen’s vocal abilities are...
I had the opportunity to speak with Buddy Nielsen of Senses Fail and we talked about his band's new album, Renacer, and the inspiration behind the album, the mindset while recording it, and what why it's important to be a veteran band helping out younger bands. You can read the entire thing here.
We don’t make music to make it anymore; we don’t make music to, you know, pay our bills. We do it because we love it and that takes so much pressure off what you have to do. You put a record out there and hope that…you do it for yourself and you can actually do that, because most bands up and coming think that they have to write a record that appeals to this fan and these kids like this and we...
