Kevin Devine has posted a lengthy, and quite good, piece on Facebook.
I’m a straight white male, and I don’t know what it’s like not to be. I should never be the loudest voice in this conversation. I think we (people like me) all have deep listening to do if we have any hope at making the people who aren’t us feel safe, valued, equal in this society. We have real & increased responsibility to bear as the power brokers, which we are, and have been. Anyone arguing otherwise, suggesting that we’re a “post-racial” society etc., is skirting offensiveness at worst and…sticking to a willful & highly selective understanding of America’s history, at best. It’s not hard for me to empathize with...

Kevin Devine wrote a piece for The Talkhouse about David Bazan's latest release and the touring life.
When that changed, and I was able to transition from part-timing to earning a living playing music, my fear of a life spent running face-first into an endless succession of self-constructed brick walls eventually straightened me out. This was a slow-dawning stroke of luck, because sober senses would be required to navigate an insane industry that was rapidly changing, too. Anyone I knew who was “just” a musician was predominantly maintaining that title by busting their ass on tour, selling their songs to car commercials or some combination thereof.

The second "Inside Kevin Devine" feature has been posted via PropertyOfZack. Jesse Lacey, Andy Hull, The God Damn Band, and many others provide commentary.
So I met Kevin eventually at an outdoor show we played together, and I think Miracle had already kind of split up, and he was this kind of crazy twitchy kid who was really good at guitar and sang solo on stage at hardcore and emo shows around New York. So then we were friends, and that was that. I don’t know how things go from there, but I do know that watching Kevin over the years, I’ve realized that while I or other musicians I know had to develop something, Kevin seemed always capable of everything. He always listened to cool...

If you like Kevin Devine, you should check out this piece on PropertyofZack -- seriously, that's the pitch.
One thing is, there’s a part of me that thinks I’m not radical enough. That I’m actually worse than someone who is politically ignorant because I have been exposed to all of these things, but I haven’t fully gotten into some extreme way of living. I think it’s been really torturous for some women that I’ve been in relationships with because I’ve had these bouts of “we don’t do enough” for picking the cause. It’s this really vague thing. What I’ve come to realize as I’ve gotten older is that there’s an invisible council in my head. If I am not taking care of myself, no matter what...

Kevin Devine hates Collective Soul's "December" in the latest AV Club Hatesong.
But it always felt to me like that band was a prime example of wolf in sheep’s clothing—or sheep in wolf’s clothing is maybe more appropriate. They were sort of capitalizing on that grunge, alternative-rock boom, but they were an adult-contemporary band. Even the guitars on the songs are not like anything anyone would ever confuse as menacing or anything like that.

I kind of thought the crowd-funding thing was interesting but I had a whole mess of fear based somewhat ethical concerns. Most of which I addressed pretty explicitly in the essay that accompanies the Kickstarter campaign but I ultimately decided to do it because I wanted to do something different and see if either A, I was super misguided in thinking I had the kind of connection with the audience that I thought I had or B, I was correct in assuming that they're not concerned where the records come out label-wise as...
