Britney's Spear - Britney's Spear
Britney’s Spear – Britney’s Spear
Record Label: Woodland Records
Release Date: March 2009
Who are they?
I guess it’s pointless to tell the anecdote about how I saw this group’s name on an Absolute Punk reviews list and shuddered, then read the list at least two more times before realizing this was actually some punk band from New York, not the psychotic pop diva. Britney’s Spear, who probably have lawsuits pending, have no known affiliation with bad parenting and/or lip syncing, and as an added bonus you can listen to their whole EP on their MySpace page! Plus their Influences section lists “hallucinogens” and “straight edge” back to back, which I found charming.
How are they?
The EP has its ups and downs. They’re at their best getting straight to the point, as in the early-80’s-hardcore blast of “Into The Neighborhood” – “Burning Bilboards” kicks off pretty awesome too, but overstays its welcome a bit. “Geiger Counter” and “Old Wolves’ Tale” push into a calmer more alternative style that fits the band alright, but they would have been wiser to stick to the Adolescents-indebted sounds of the beginning of the EP – especially considering how cool the vocalist’s shouting voice sounds. “Dream Big” is a pretty cool Pegboy sounding minor-chord punk tune that’s also a lot slower than the first couple tracks but holds up pretty well. I’d say you should give these guys a listen – it’s free, what have you got to lose? – and then if you like it, you can buy it right off of the MySpace page.
