Weekly Nostalgia: Matthew Good Band

Even if you prefer Matthew Good’s recent solo efforts, I think it’s hard to deny that some very excellent records came out of his time in the Matthew Good Band. The Canadian alternative rock act formed in the early 90’s and released a record called Last of the Ghetto Astronauts before hitting it big with Underdogs in 1997. That album’s opener “Deep Six” has a catchy chorus that still pulls me in even to this day and “Apparitions” is one hauntingly beautiful track. My personal favourite though is Beautiful Midnight. It also happens to be their most commercially successful release, since the singles gained heavy radio rotation and earned the band two Junos. Even today you'll hear those singles on commercial Canadian radio sometimes and I think it's safe to say most people know at least on of those songs. The record itself celebrated its tenth anniversary last year and I remember watching the captivating music videos for “Strange Days” and Load Me Up” on MuchMusic. It was short lived though. Their last effort The Audio of Being was released in 2001 and the next year the Matthew Good Band dissolved due to tensions within the group. Do you remember the days when it wasn't just Matthew Good, but the Matthew Good Band? Feel free to share your memories in the replies.

Believe it or not, i'm American and I love MGB. I got into them right before Beautiful Midnight came out and fell in love. Even though I never quite understood why they had a monkey on the disc haha. But still, 'Strange Days' was amazing and the intro into 'Giant' is nothing short of greatness.

TheOtherAndrew 02/17/10 10:08 AM

Matthew Good's solo material is gold.

Wisher 02/17/10 10:11 AM

as far as matthew good goes, born losers = effing awesome.

messiguy01 02/17/10 10:20 AM

My kind of nostalgia.

Def. with kennedy. Back when muchmusic was pumped in with all the other satellite channels, unsung Canadian heroes dug into my heart. Serial Joe, Treble Charger, GOB...bands I'd never have even heard otherwise, became instant favorites. But Matthew Good (Band) took hold like no other band/artist since, American or otherwise. I have every release since B.M. and to this day could easily put in any of the lot and listen start to finish. Stinging lyrics, haunting guitars...Good just has the whole package for me. "Suburbia" still plays me to peace and is probably my favorite MGB song.

Excellent choice. My favorite is by far beautiful midnight. Was also a huge fan of the audio of being.

ARo2431 02/17/10 10:37 AM

I love his band From First To Last. Kidding, I know it's not the same person. This isn't too bad though I'll have to check out more.

Smash Adams 02/17/10 10:45 AM

I always think he was in Watchmen

Supernovacaine 02/17/10 11:02 AM

oh man this brings me back

ProudlyLastPlac 02/17/10 11:15 AM

K-I-C-K-A-S-S That's the way we spell success!

Yeah, I have to agree with everything you said about Beautiful Midnight, and Load Me Up is still one of my favorite songs to this day.

Awesome comments like this make me even more sad to see what MuchMusic has become now. They should seriously take a cue from MTV and just drop the word "music" from their brand because they only care about reality TV and those really annoying comedians that they've hired now. Today you'd never know that I discovered Refused or Belvedere through that station. Nor do any of the VJs they've hired in the last few years come close to being as talented as George Stroumboulopoulos.

mgrogan048 02/17/10 11:32 AM

Really odd my friend and I were JUST talking about him 2 days ago. I've been on a huge MGB kick since then. Well played.

Hagysaurus Rex 02/17/10 11:37 AM

Didn't he kick everyone out of the band and is still touring and recording?

Either way, the man knows rock/pop songwriting and penned some incredible tunes back in the day.

fearthesloths 02/17/10 11:38 AM

Matt Good is amazing. The Audio of Being is a stellar album and my personal favourite MGB album, although out of all of his work I have to say I like Hospital Music the best. Hospital Music is honestly one of the most haunting records I have ever heard, dealing with his depression and attempted suicide... great album.

Phil507 02/17/10 11:48 AM

Beautiful Midnight remains one of my favorite albums of all time. I love how dark all the subject matter is:

Load Me Up/Jenni's Song : alcoholism
Going All The Way: teen suicide
Let's Get It On/A Boy In His Machine Gun: mental illness

etc.

I'm a fan of the man's whole catalog and I'm psyched that people are into him on this site.

Yes, he has a solo career and I mentioned that in the first sentence of my blurb. EDIT: But with that awesome comment below about Big Shiny Tunes, I think you have to have watched MuchMusic 10 years ago to understand the real nostalgia factor. The Matthew Good Band era of his career is not the same, nor is it as commercially successful with the demise of MuchMusic. I hear old MGB songs on the radio more frequently than I hear his solo stuff too.

providence36 02/17/10 11:58 AM

Love everything this guy does. Beautiful Midnight is by far one of my favorite albums of all time, and Hospital Music comes in at a close second. He's got a great collection of songs that showcase his talent

thechetearly 02/17/10 12:09 PM

This dude is SOOOO fantastic.

LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOOVE his solo record. I'm glad he was mentioned on this site, I feel like he is WAY under recognized for his talent.

Agreed, Hospital Music is fantastic, but at the same time I find it hard to listen to fully, end to end.

anamericangod 02/17/10 12:19 PM

Hospital Music is an incredible album.

ugman_2000 02/17/10 12:25 PM

Never heard of this band or his solo efforts before this, I'm diggin the videos posted so I'm definitley gonna be checking out some of the mentioned albums

Any Canadians out here remember the early Big Shiny Tunes? Good stuff.

Yes! I have a copy of the third one somewhere.

maffy 02/17/10 02:31 PM

i love matt good solo, as well as him and the band back in the day. forever is, and forever will be one of my favourite artists, and definitely a favourite canadian. from ghetto astronauts, to avalanche, right up to vancouver, and everything in between - outstanding.

goodarmcindy 02/17/10 03:12 PM

Audio of Being is probably my favourite (MGB) album, put it on shuffle and if you hit the trifecta of Man of Action, Carmelina and Anti-pop you know you are going to have a fantastic day.

That being said he probably hasn't released a bad album, Vancouver was seemingly criminally under-rated and under-exposed on release and all of his solo stuff has been consistently good. I see a lot of love for Hospital Music, and rightly so, but Avalanche probably wins out as his best.

TJR 02/17/10 05:35 PM

Thanks for posting this. One of the most underrated acts and artist of our generation. If you haven't heard his newest record 'Vancouver' yet, do yourself a favor.

Yes! I have the second one in my room, no Matt Good, but Paranoid Android and other good songs are on there

gr33ndayfr3ak 02/17/10 07:33 PM

I'm listening to these songs for the first time, and I could totally hear these songs being played on the radio and everyone thinking they were just released. It's crazy these were recorded 10 years ago.

tommyboyolp32 02/17/10 08:07 PM

Vancouver was my favorite album of 2009. been a fan for years. just keeps getting better!

benlong 02/17/10 10:15 PM

Gutter Luxury 02/18/10 06:04 AM

Their latter efforts were my reference (Unintended era)...early stuff was pretty shitty.
