Weekly Nostalgia: Hot Rod Circuit

These bands we look back on with fond memories, it seems most of them lasted only a few short years and left behind scant discographies. Perhaps having an all-too-short career adds to the mystique and makes a band an obvious subject for a feature like this. However, for proof that a band can hang around for a decade, produce five excellent albums and still leave us wanting more, enter Hot Rod Circuit. Their early records were filled with angsty guitar rock, perfect for bespectacled teens into Weezer, Piebald and The Get Up Kids. The pop element was definitely present, but didn't manifest fully until the super-catchy (and irresistible) Sorry About Tomorrow. By their final album The Underground Is a Dying Breed, they were starting to reveal their Alabama roots with a distinct twang and the addition of slide guitar into their formula. Throughout their evolution, the heart and great songwriting remained ever present-- these guys just weren't capable of writing a shitty song. HRC played their last show near the end of 2007, and while it would have been great to see where they would have taken their music next, it's hard to feel bad about the body of work they've left us. Frontman Andy Jackson was (is?) involved with the project Death in the Park and is currently in Terrible Things (formerly known as Initials) with Fred Mascherino. Here's to hoping songs don't stop flowing from his pen for a long while.

"The Pharmacist" (from Sorry About Tomorrow)

"The Best You Ever Knew" (from Reality's Coming Through)

PirateSkater182 03/23/10 09:45 PM

The monday before SXSW I got to see Terrible Things at a free show, which was awesome.
After the show I got to see Andy drunkenly play many HRC songs, which made for great sing-a-longs.
Really nice guy.

ninthandash 03/23/10 09:46 PM

I really love Underground is a Dying Breed. Is their other stuff worth checking out?

The Nick Life 03/23/10 09:56 PM

I want "this is not the time or place" to be played at my funeral. That song is one of my favorites.

Keagan Ilvonen 03/23/10 09:59 PM

One of the best things to come out of this scene.

owiseone35 03/23/10 10:00 PM

Band was so good. Sorry About Tomorrow is continually played on my ipod. Safely and The Pharmacist are 2 of my most played songs, amazing band.

Great band! Everything from Sorry About Tomorrow on was gold right up through the acoustic E.P. following the release of The Underground is a Dying Breed. Death In the Park is/was (?) awesome, as well!

JohnIN 03/23/10 10:16 PM

To this day, HRC is one of my favorite bands. They were the band that really got me into music and I'll always have a soft spot for them because of that. Even though I've aged alot since I first heard HRC and have grown away from a lot of the stuff I listened to back then, listening to Sorry About Tomorrow, If I Knew Now What I Knew Then, and Reality's Coming Through always puts me in a good mood.

Hereformusic 03/23/10 10:17 PM

Starting with Sorry, About Tomorrow and loved everything since.. What about Safety In Numbers?

abusedcat 03/23/10 10:17 PM

One of my top 3 favorite bands.
A damn shame I only got to see them twice.
Andy, Casey, Jay, Mike, everyone that was in this band fucking killed it.

Slightly different kind of band (more along the lines of "post-hardcore," for lack of a better way of putting it) but ridiculously good! Strongly recommended if you like Andy's voice.

aboyandhiscurse 03/23/10 10:22 PM

i thought this band was NEVER going to be in a weekly nostalgia. fuck i love this band. me and my friend have put on a mean cover of this is not the time nor place waaay too many times.

birtcho 03/23/10 10:33 PM

The Pharmacist is still one of my all time favourite songs

grimis16 03/23/10 10:34 PM

Sorry About Tomorrow is one of my favorite records of all time. Shit came out in 02 i think and i have been able to listen to it daily since without it getting old. Absolutely love this band

craigboliver 03/23/10 10:42 PM

hands down, one of the best bands of our time.

P_T_W 03/23/10 10:51 PM

Excellent live show.. anybody remember how spazzed out these guys were at skate and surf 04?

Legit band, my brother got me into them with their first release and I still enjoy them up to their last one.

cowboychris88 03/23/10 11:35 PM

safely is one of the greatest songs of all time

Mirrorsandfevers 03/23/10 11:39 PM

Never gave these guys a proper listen. Where should I start?

NorthstarPark 03/23/10 11:49 PM

Solid solid band, I was really sad to see them go. I couldnt really get into Death In The Park, I'll try again though. I havent heard a song buy Terrible Things yet, I was waiting until the album comes out but I might just give in and listen.

starkandarcadia 03/24/10 02:52 AM

Great choice; Stateside is one of my all time favorite songs

kevinrocks409 03/24/10 03:24 AM

incredible band, how i miss them. they will always be a favorite of mine

anamericangod 03/24/10 03:35 AM

Best show I ever saw was Hot Rod Circuit/Say Anything/Northstar/Straylight Run. Unreal.

emo_boo 03/24/10 04:14 AM

arcarsenal72 03/24/10 04:15 AM

Such an awesome band. I remember seeing them around 2005 and it was one of the best shows I've been to. Unforgettable.

Cue the Sun 03/24/10 04:21 AM

I remember I could have seen them at Warped Tour in 2007, but opted to get a hot dog instead. They broke up soon after and I've had a hard time forgiving myself ever since.

They're one of my favorite bands, for sure.

Gregory Robson 03/24/10 04:33 AM

Goddamn you write well, Jeremy. Such a fair and honest portrait of a band whose reign felt far shorter than 10 years. Cheers, mate.

piaffeprncess98 03/24/10 04:36 AM

Loved these guys. Got into them rather late with Sorry About Tomorrow, but I prefer Reality's Coming Through.

Elijscott 03/24/10 04:55 AM

This is and has been my absolute favorite band for a long time. Really glad to see all the love in here for them. Went to 17 shows and every single time they were amazing. Actually, I guess I went to 19 shows if you count the acoustic shows Andy played in Florida last year. I've also been to 4 Death in the Park shows. Freaking amazing.

EndSerenading 03/24/10 05:01 AM

man i miss HRC. these weekly nostalgia threads are great. brings me back to HS ha

coolwithme19 03/24/10 05:08 AM

Absolutely. Love DTEA!

As for HRC, I have to say Safely is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. I'm glad I was able to see them at least a couple times. The last time I saw them was Warped 2007. I was one of three people there, other than a few band members that were also on the tour. It was sad that no one went to their set.

*Ro' 03/24/10 05:51 AM

'45's' is such a hit. What's going on with Death In The Park?

MADSTA 03/24/10 06:03 AM

Love The Underground, US Royalty is a jam.
