Staff Recommendations: April 29th, 2012
 

Hi, once again welcome to the time of the week where we tell you what to do and you listen because what else do you have to do? As our moms say, "You're so important! Stop stealing my lipstick! What do you even do with the lipstick!?" So basically, what I'm saying is, what you are about to read is essentially gospel. Let us pray.

I got an xbox360 this week with my tax return money because I am an ADULT. So I recommend a bunch of games you nerds have already played (but especially Batman: Arkham City). Musically, who knows. Mostly Old Gray and Craft Spells' new mini album Gallery. It's as solid and surf rock-y as ever. Oh, and of course, All Get Out.

Listen to Lianne La Havas if you want some sweet neo-soul with hints of Erykah Badu and Joni Mitchell. In particular, check out this version of "No Room For Doubt". Her new single "Lost & Found" is out now. Also, check out Theme Park if you're a fan of Talking Heads or Morrissey. Their new single "Two Hours" can be heard here.

This weekend has mostly consisted of me sitting in a dark room playing that clip of The Gaslight Anthem's new track over and over, whooping and crying intermittently. Other than that, after Thursday’s Demo Discussion a friend of mine showed me his new band, Goldwaite. Compare themselves with More Than Life, Defeater etc. Promising stuff.

I got to check out A Step Ahead last night. They were phenomenal. Recommended for fans that liked Drive Thru pop-punk but with a little more edge. Just NFL, NBA, and NHL all weekend. Congrats to my neighbor Jose Gumbs (whom I never knew lived down the street from me) for signing with the New Orleans Saints.

I'm just chilling eating garbage nachos and oven fries, thinking about what'd i'd recommend to the fine people reading this right now. Yikes! Anyways, i'm starting a new series either this week or next called "From The Gym" -- it's playlists from people around the music/sports scene; that being said, i'll be kicking off the series with a playlist of my own to give everyone an idea of what to expect. One of the bands that's an absolute STAPLE in my playlist is Trapped Under Ice; they're one of my favorite hardcore bands alongside bands like Terror.

Lmfao that was funny. You want a good 360 game, get Rayman Origins. Great platformer.

I went to the Defeater/Touche Amore tour last night and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of hardcore. Both bands were incredible and the opening acts were great as well.

Yes! I loved Cowalker! Still have all their stuff! Also, Old Gray is great. Cannot wait for them to release more stuff.

The new Raindance EP, New Blood. Awesomely heavy and weird. If you were waiting for a band to bridge the gap between '90s metallic hardcore (Converge, Unbroken) and the violent panic of early 2000s metalcore (Poison the Well, Last Night in Town), you're not going to find a better album. Get it when they drop it in May.

New Sigur Rós album is unsurprisingly great. But it's still impressive that it's probably in the upper echelon of their catalog. At least for me.


These two albums are almost like the same damn thing, but they're both good, so I don't mind one bit.

Diggin it. Saw New Navy come up as a similar artist on Spotify, their track "Zimbabwe" is a good time.

And now I wait for a moment in my life where I can say, "As my mother always said, stop stealing my lipstick! What do you even do with the lipstick!?" at the end of a conversation and walk away.
