For some reason Fox only wanted to air 22 episodes but they ordered 23 so Unearthed was filmed after the season 1 finale. It ended up airing as the 11th episode of season 2.

I don't know why this is a big deal. Character resurrections are a common trope within the comic book universe. The show is simply better off with Coulson in it.
