Horkheimer and Adorno have an excellent article floating somewhere around. I found it a bit too nihilistic for my tastes, but all of the concerns it raised were valid. I'm finding it right now.

Bump to ask if anyone's read Bhabha or Spivak.
Bhabha is one of the most difficult to follow and confusing writers I've ever read. I remember trying to get through one of his essays for my Literary Theory class on Colonialism and Post-Colonialism and just saying "what the fuck" and giving up trying to understand anything.

Yeah, Bhabha's a wanker. Hélène Cixous, however, is a super genius brilliant madwoman poet-philosopher type genius. And yes, genius was repeated intentionally.

I feel like I'm using her in this paper I'm writing just because every time I quote her, I feel like a total badass. Well, and also it's helpful to use her ideas. But mostly the badass thing.

Not sure if David's still around, but I just finished Foucault's Docile Bodies, need to read the following text about the Panopticon, although My reading sort of got into it anyway.

Panopticons instill control because they are "all seeing," any member of the prison population can be seen at any time. However, the idea is more than this, the Panopticon instills a belief in the prison society that they are all being watched simultaneously, this would require the impossible though. One guard for every one prisoner, an obvious impossibility. Thus the panopticon is covered with shutters that allow the guards to see out and the prisoners cannot see in. Control is then instilled, no guards are needed. The prisoners control themselves for the belief that they may be watched at any time and therefore believe that they are being watched all the time.

Highways act in much the same way, yet they give the driver a sense of freedom. The driver is able to drive at any speed, save for when the police are there to "hail" the driver. The highway is actually in control, like Foucault's control society. The driver is stuck in a linear path from which he/she cannot escape. Escape may be possible, but it is simply another road to drive down with the same expectations. The ultimate destination may have changed but the capabilities of the driver on the road/highway have not changed.
