Yeah, RCA was "holding" her as developmental and not letting her release anything until they deemed it worthy. They hired her as a songwriter, too.

I remember seeing something on TV about how her mom was like, "Are you sure you're willing to walk away from the biggest label in the industry?" and she said something along the lines of "I can sit around and wait for the right time to release music, or I can just start now. Why would I not want to start now?"

Just another reason why she's so amazing. She made a brave choice in saying no and going ahead. Kudos to her.
