Michael Woodford may have written the year’s most important academic paper. Here’s why.

Apparently he is recommending the Fed targeting nominal GDP rates rather than just inflation rates, as NGDP includes both GDP growth and inflation. It all makes sense to me.

Heard that argument on the money illusion, seems like people are listening now. That guy (sumner) has some interesting theories on monetary policy, like low fed fund rates choking yield margins across the entire bond market. He suggests perhaps they should have been raised in lieu of the lowering trend of the past 10+ years.

Get a subscription to The Economist; will really get you in the mindset of seeing various news events, from the standpoint of an economist. I minored in Economics, but I totally wish I majored in it, as I found it 10x more interesting than Business Management.

I've always found the economist to have an annoying slant in most of what they publish. Prefer businessweek meself

I've personally find The Economist to not have much of a slant. Some of it does seem a bit opinionated, but overall I think it's pretty good. I like the international news focus that The Economist has. In general though I hate reading strictly about business-related stuff, so I don't think I could read Businessweek.

Wouldn't you agree that financial planning is more complicated today that it was back then? Especially considering the nature of the way people move between jobs and careers today, compared to back then.

Yes. Technology and cars are more complicated than they were back then, but they haven't necessitated assistance, have they? We don't ask the government to teach us how to use an iPhone do we?

From the other thread;

What false dichotomy?

What other options would you pursue?

Strictly Government vs. Strictly Non-Government.

I don't have a good enough answer yet.
