Tolstoy. Yes. I was born in Ukraine and my mom used to read me his work and even then, when I was little, it was awesome. I haven't read it in English but I imagine that it's just about as good.

Your mom is the best. And Tolstoy is pretty awesome too.

She also used to read me Chekhov, if you've ever heard of him. He's so good as well.

I haven't read his plays (I hear great things about them) but his short stories are some of the best ever written. I love Russian lit, I have an entire shelf on my bookshelf dedicated to it.

That's awesome haha I only have a couple books with his short stories and I haven't read them in years, but this thread is inspiring me to. Older Russian literature is some of the best in the world.

I just finished up reading American Psycho which I found to be fantastic, such an interesting read. I suggest anyone even remotley interested in serial killers and the like to give it a go, you may have to skip past alot of the gorey scenes if you have a weak stomach though.

I just got a collection of Faulker's short stories. I highly recommend the short story "Beyond".

The Alchemist is like a theme being repeated over and over again with a story hidden beneath it. Should be easy for my thesis though

I've been reading Cloud Atlas. I only have like 30 pages left, but I've almost totally lost interest in it. It's a shame that it drags so much towards the end, but parts of it were incredible. Looking forward to seeing how the movie adaptation goes.

Can anyone recommend any good books centered around traveling/vagabonding/living in a foreign country?

Yoga For People Who Can't Be Bothered To Do It is a pretty quick, entertaining read. But Geoff Dyer's more like a nomad than a vagabond.

I can definitely recommend A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. It's not a foreign country, but his journey hiking the Appalachin Trail. Great book, surprisingly entertaining for a book about hiking. You will need to be into wilderness and camping to enjoy this book. Otherwise some of it may be lost.
