Top 10 "Under the Radar But Damn Good" Albums

Posted by - 10:01 AM on 11/19/12
I was listening to Brandtson's Send Us a Signal last night, and it got me thinking about albums that are so good and yet most people probably don't own them or even know about them. Ummm ... and if that's not a good catalyst for a top 10 list, I don't know what is. So here are the top 10 albums that I think go unnoticed and you should check out. As always, there are obviously hundreds of others that could be included -- but these are the ones that I felt like sharing. Feel free to add any to the replies that you think people should check out. I linked all of them to their streaming versions on Rdio, so now you have no excuse to not check them out. Oh, and this isn't really in any order besides when I thought of the album to include.

1) Brandtson - Send Us a Signal
NoteThis is the album that got me thinking about this kind of list -- and it's such a great album, and I feel like hardly anyone knows about it.

2) Slick Shoes - Wake Up Screaming
NoteThere was a time in high-school where I would probably have said this was my favorite band. The guitar riffs, the drums, the hooks yet fast played music? I ate this up. I think it holds up quite well -- and yet this band still remains underrated.

3) Home Grown - Act Your Age
NoteI think I played this just as much as Blink 182's Enema of the State back in the day ... ok, maybe not as much, but it was damn close.

4)Audio Karate - Lady Melody
NoteI've always felt this was the kind of album that got released at the wrong time -- a few years later and I think it would have caught on with where the music scene was shifting so much more.

5) Augustana - Can't Love, Can't Hurt
NoteOne of my favorite albums that I feel no one ever talks about.

6) Bodyjar - How It Works
NoteBasically the entire Bodyjar catalog is great.

7) Days Away - Mapping an Invisible World
NoteThis band and album was just a little before their time. This is the kind of thing I could see doing really well in today's musical landscape.

8) I Am Arrows - Sun Comes Up Again
NoteOnly came out in 2010, but I feel like no one knows about this great album.

9) Lucky Boys Confusion - Commitment

10) Over It - Silverstrand

1. Chad Perrone - Wake (All of his albums could be included here but this is his best imo.)
2. The Reign of Kindo - This is What Happens
3. City Sleeps - Hotel
4. Jenny Owen Youngs - An Unwavering Band of Light
5. Fightstar - Grand Unification (A decent amount of people know who Fightstar (or at least Charlie Simpson) are, but considering how brilliant this album is, there should be a lot more)

Brandtson were such a good band (They're 2 EPs were great not to mention the awesome Hello, Control album), I feel like most of the Deep Elm roster could fit in here, so many good bands on that label & so many went/go unheard of.

Anyways I'd say the following albums definitley fall under this & are classics in my old punk jaded eyes

Beatsteaks - Living Targets or Limbo Messiah

Samiam - You're Freaking Me Out

Dishwalla - Pet Your Friends

Brandtson - Send Us a Signal and Anberlin - Never Take Friendship Personal, were both on repeat for so long when they came out. Still listen to them, classics.

Agree on Audio Karate as well, absolutely love them. Though I was a bigger fan of Space Camp. Indian School is pretty damn good, hope they continue to release new material.
