Talk to them, don't be a creep and having similar general interests help.

Don't talk to them online toooo much before meeting, because then they get used to your online persona and have expectations of that's who you are. You have to get to know them in person before wasting months chatting online, realizing when you meet them you are someone totally different (or vice versa). But chat them up online so you can get a feel if you have any chemistry...and figure out if they're an ax murderer.

Did the online dating thing for a while...and I've landed myself in an awesome 3 year relationship. Note:You will meet a lot of duds.

You're young to be doing the online thing. Get out there, meet people, be social! Don't spend your 20s in front of a computer. A friend of mine was on Match.com for over a year, and all the guys she met up with were either boring duds or complete assholes. She ended up meeting her current boyfriend (of several years now) at a show we went to. I'm not saying that everyone you'll meet in person is going to be a winner - there are assholes and dullards everywhere - but you'll get a better and more immediate feel for the chemistry when meeting someone in person.

I'm not trying to stigmatize online dating. It works for some people, but it doesn't seem to be working for the OP. Maybe it's time to try a new tactic.
