Sing It Loud - Sing It Loud

Sing It Loud - Sing It Loud
Record Label: Epitaph Records
Release Date: March 29, 2008

If you follow Minneapolis, Minnesota's Sing It Loud, their self-titled EP will be a familiar listen. Many, if not all, of these songs have been floating around the internet for the last several months and for the most part, they're all enjoyable. Best listened to in the car with the windows down, it's a summer record at its finest.

The members of Sing It Loud have diverse musical backgrounds. Some have experience in heavier music such as Nate Flynn's previous band, A Violet Desire. Some have more pop credentials such as guitarist Kieran Smith and drummer Dane Schmidt from their band Jamestown Story. Collectively, the message seems clear: write a pop record that people will love. This isnít a bad thing, however, as the hooks are so strong, they can be heard once and sang back instantly. Pop music has always been powerful: Fall Out Boy have fully utilized their melodic sensibilities and are a leader in the genre while Boys Like Girls and The Rocket Summer have skyrocketed (no pun intended) to success due to their pop prowess. Some kind of genius can be found in simple, irresistible melodies.

Producer Josh Cainís (lead guitarist for Motion City Soundtrack) influence can be heard throughout the record, especially on "I've Got a Feeling," where tinkered Moog parts are carefully placed throughout the song. All Time Low vocalist Alex Gaskarth even makes an appearance on "No One Can Tough Us," giving new listeners a familiar voice to relate to. On "Bite Your Lip," Sing It Loud hit the height of their EP. With undulating guitars and syncopated rhythms, this track should come with a warning that it may be stuck in your head for days (prepare accordingly).

An acoustic version of "Come Around" closes the album in bittersweet fashion. On one hand, I would have liked to hear it performed by the full band to keep consistent with the other four songs. On the other hand, it is appropriate that Sing It Loud choose to taper off with an acoustic song; something to ease you out of the record.

Sing It Loud are successful in crafting bridges throughout their songs that lead you through the record. They weave refrains and arrangements together while keeping the momentum constant. Singer Pat Brown's distinctive tenor delivers one hook leading to the next. The song durations are precise and tight and there are no moments that drag, only relentlessly catchy tunes. If you think this might be your new favorite summer record, you're probably right.

Great review. I wish I could see them on the tour with Valencia and Zolof, but it's only East Coast -_-
