Some Stranger - Some Stranger EP

Some Stranger - Some Stranger EP
Release Date: April 2, 2013
Record Label: Robotic Empire

In 2012, pop-punk band Daytrader released one of the best albums of the year. The album was a great showcase for vocalist (insert your own joke about his name here) Tym’s unique voice- not to mention simply an enjoyable listen. When the band broke up, Tym was left to his own devices. Joining forces with guitarist Daniel Danger, he formed Some Stranger.

The duo’s debut release, Some Stranger, is a darker effort than Daytrader’s indie-tinged swansong. “On and On” shows this immediately. After a crisp introduction, the full band kicks in to show what they can do. About a minute in, the song builds into an explosive chorus. “Let it wound/ let it haunt you,” Tym shouts. The band’s first released song, “Points East,” follows, featuring dark verses and a gripping chorus.

“Silver & the Sun” is the slowest and most straightforward song so far. It’s the EP’s final two tracks that take it from good to great: “Song One” and “Sirens.” The former song features twinkly guitars from Danger and a near-scream from Tym; the latter begins with a bizarre fade-in and is probably the slowest and quietest on the album. Don’t let that fool you- there is no absence of chugging guitars or anthemic refrains. You’ll find yourself humming the chorus riffs over and over and lamenting when the final notes fade out, ending the 17-minute album. I also think it’s worth noting that, as great as he sounded with his old band, Tym’s voice is at its peak on this album.

So if you’re still mourning the loss of your favorite up-and-coming pop-punk band, or just looking for something different to listen to, pick up Some Stranger’s EP. It’s great. And free.

"You don't have to know our faces or our names,
just the refrain,
the tips of our fingers,
the after-image."
