Windows 8 was a good idea with poor execution. However, install StartIsBack or another app on it and it's perfect.

This is a thing? If I do get a surface 2, is this usable with it?

Just wait for 8.1 if you're gonna do that. But I'd wait for Surface 3 at this point. MS is notorious for being best third time in.

By then I'll probably have the half grand I'll need. I wonder when they're going to make tablets with customizable specs for the sake of affordability.

Probably only on the Surface 2 pro or whichever one comes with the full version of windows. I don't think Windows RT has one.

As for it being a thing, you tell me.

yeah I honestly don't miss the start menu. most of the important stuff is on the right click menu, everything else is super easy to find with search (win key + q) or via pinning it.

I got the start menu back but not having it really didn't effect me. For that matter I didn't use the start menu much in 7, you get used to just hitting the windows key typing the first couple letters of the app you want and hitting enter.

Yeah I don't miss it either I have my most used programs pinned to the taskbar, and I have Computer, Recycle Bin and Control Panel on the Desktop.

On the topic of not missing the start menu, I'm very used to various Linux distributions so whenever I do have to use a Windows machine I tend to install a great application called Launchy which basically with an assigned keyboard combo, it opens up a quicklaunch console that's extremely fast, sexy, and easy to use. Even has some really cool easy to install themes like these on DeviantArt.

VirtuaWin is also an awesome application for Linux-fans, it lets you add multiple workspaces on your desktop with keyboard shortcuts
