A Life of Science - 11.23.11

Interviewed by
A Life of Science - 11.23.11The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:

A Life of Science

1. How did you get your band name?
"A Life of Science" is a multimedia band...we have comic books, novels, animations, videos, artwork, etc. that all focus on a robot apocalypse story we came up with. "A Life of Science" was the name of the first draft of our story concept, in which the story's protagonist is a prodigy in Robotics.

2. How did this band get started?
Core members James and Scott met in college (Northern Arizona University) and started making electronic rock music in 2006. Since then, they've collaborated with dozens of incredible artists to produce an album trilogy based on their story concept.

3. What bands are you influenced by?
Everything under the sun, but mostly music that incorporates electronic elements. Indie Rock, Trance, House, Electro, Post-Hardcore, Dubstep, Pop, etc.

4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
We would love to tour with Radiohead, Alan Parsons Project, Grandaddy, Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd, The Who...

5. Best food to eat on tour?
We try to keep it healthy every chance we get, since so much of tour food ends up being fast food, and bodies don't run well off that kind of fuel. Greek & vegetarian places are usually money.

6. Why should people listen to your band?
We offer a unique musical experience in which a crazy scientific story with homicidal robots, underwater cities, and forbidden romance unfolds via multiple multimedia outlets. You're not just listening. You are experiencing.

7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?
Tiger Woods. Duh.

8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
I would thank all of the amazing artists and musicians that helped us tell our story. Josh Isaac (Novelist and Tour Drummer), Cristhian Zamora (Illustrator), Cliff Benoit (Colorist), Armondo Williams (artist), Ben Anderson (Studio Drummer), Zakk Geist (Multi-Instrumentalist), Angel Garcia (Drums), Nathan Blackwell (Writer), JD Tate (Multi-Instrumentalist), and so many more, including our supportive families.

9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
The internet ruined the industry...but we do love the internet. Double-edged sword.

10. Memorable tour experience?
It was our tour manager's birthday in New York, so we went out for sushi. Our guitarist, Anthony, did a wasabi snooter and his face was on fire for the rest of the night. Don't try that at home, kids!

11. What does AP.net mean to you?
AP is a great source for finding out about new bands and seeing what more popular bands are up to. Great news.

12. What is your favorite song to play?
We have a song called "The Phantoms Descend" off our (upcoming) sophomore album, Vita Nova. It's a song that involves jumping up and down during the verse and when the audience jumps with us, it's electric.

13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
We <3 NYC. Seriously. But we really wanna do a Euro Tour so we can see what that's all about.

14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Weezer, Nirvana, Green Day, Blind Melon, Van Halen, Queensryche.

15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
Flight. Weightlessness rules. And falling sucks.

16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
We all go around and give soft high fives to each other and say in a courteous voice, "Good luck." Not sure why, but it makes us laugh every time.

17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
James & Scott are black belt masters at Super Smash Brothers for Nintendo 64.

18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio? Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish?
We have a few songs coming up in our release schedule that might be considered "pop formatted," but we've always believed that satellite/internet radio is where we'll thrive.

19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
What spare time? The A Life of Science project keeps us busy, but if we get a second to breathe, we play disc golf.

20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
Most of the band members contribute their skills to the multimedia aspects of the A Life of Science project. Lead vocalist/programmer James Keenan does the band's web design, animations, comic book writing, comic book layout, graphic design. Backup vocalist / keyboardist Matty Steinkamp leads most video projects. Drummer Josh Isaac writes the novels.
