Golden City – Cavalry + Brighten
Record Label: Sound Fiction
Release Date: March 9, 2009
Golden City is the new band from Eric Richter of Christie Front Drive fame. Richter is joined by Jim Lehnhoff, Chris Peterson, and Richter’s The 101 bandmate Jeremy Jones.
How Is It?
Cavalry + Brighten is Golden City’s first official release and although the album only contains two songs, I find myself listening to these songs on a constant basis. The songs on Cavalry + Brighten are a perfect marriage between the more straightforward pop-rock of The 101 and the emotional power of Christie Front Drive. However, Golden City is not just a mash-up of Richter’s past projects. Golden City simply takes the best components of each band and builds upon them to create a refreshing take on the pop-rock genre. “Cavalry” is energetic right from the start with driving guitars and Richter’s unmistakable vocals and is an excellent song to listen to during the summer. “Brighten” starts out with lushly layered instrumentals and sounds like what I imagine a new Christie Front Drive song would sound like if they made more albums. The only complaint I have about “Cavalry + Brighten” is that it is too short and leaves me wanting to hear more. Luckily, Golden City released a self-titled full-length on Magic Bullet Records shortly after Cavalry + Brighten and I cannot wait to give it a listen.
