Before the “emo” tag became a part of popular culture, The Get Up Kids were making the Midwest proud with their unique rock ‘n’ roll sound. Whether they got crowds jumping along to the fast-paced confessional “Coming Clean” or kept them entranced with the piano driven “I’ll Catch You”, The Get Up Kids proved themselves as a band comfortable in creating pop hits, unabashed ballads, or anything inbetween. Though there is not enough space here to laud every individual effort that made the band special, a big part of their success was due to Matt Pryor’s unmistakable voice, which somehow blended the ruggedness of rock with the irresistible lure of pop. To this day Something to Write Home About is still one of the best track-by-track albums our scene has produced. This “Weekly Nostalgia” post would be a bittersweet remembrance if not for the fact that The Get Up Kids have reformed and are once again sharing the stage together – we should consider ourselves very lucky. Their music was essential in shaping the musical futures of artists such as Mark Hoppus, Pete Wentz, and Ace Enders, and with a new tour currently underway, they are ready to gain new fans who value substance over (neon) style. It’s commonplace to hear people complain that some new, unsigned bands are not receiving the acclaim they deserve. But for the moment forget about finding a new flavor of the week and head to the replies to revisit some great moments in The Get Up Kids’ career. Yeah. You're not really expecting it at all, and it just sounds like pure heartbreak. I love everything about the song: the message and meaning, the delivery of the vocals, the music, it's just something special. I'm not an enormous GUK fan by any means, but this one stands out to me as one of their best songs.
