Breathe Carolina - Hello Fascination

Breathe Carolina - Hello Fascination
Release Date: August 18th, 2009
Record Label: Fearless Records

I'm starting to find myself actually listening to some of these new bands in this new electro-screamo genre. When I first heard Breathe Carolina's first album It's Classy, Not Classic I was immediately drawn into their music. They had fresh synths, harmonic key tones, and overall, I was impressed with their ability to mix screams with the techno/electronica/pop feel to their songs. I'll admit it: I'm a fan of It's Classy, Not Classic.

As you can imagine, I was anxiously awaiting for their new album, Hello Fascination. I was a little worried at first, after seeing that they signed with Fearless and got Matt Squire to produce their album (he changed 3OH!3). So I feared Breathe Carolina may fall into the same fold as 3OH!3. My fears were right.

On the upside, the first song on Hello Fascination was their single, "Hello Fascination," and it has the same Breathe Carolina feel to it, just with a twist of a low-key guitar added. I liked the song and quickly moved on to the next song ("I'm The Type of Person to Take it Personal") which I also enjoyed. Other songs on their album including "The Dressing Room" and "I Tripped and Fell in Portland" are at the Breathe Carolina caliber I had expected. They have steady beats with synths, electronic beats, keys, a little guitar, and overall, that Breathe Carolina tempo I like.

However, the rest of the album begins to be a downer and takes a nosedive. "Take Me to Infinity" has a very Jonas Brothers type feeling, mixing cheesy pop synths with a very common pop tempo and beat, not to mention the extremely cheesy lyrics that possess all Breathe Carolina's songs. For example, "a friend in need is a friend I dont need" is a line that comes from their song "Rescue." I really wonder while listening to this song if they were either A) drunk or stoned at the time, or B) they are actually that bad at writing lyrics. It might be both. The rest of the album holds the same feel as "Rescue" and "Take Me to Infinity." Their song, "I.D.G.A.F." (I Don't Give A F*ck) has very cheesy lyrics and sounds like something you might hear on a playlist with Miley Cyrus and Lady GaGa.

Overall, this is an album that I had held high hopes to, but was let down. Many people are into the new sound of Breathe Carolina (14 year old girls) and the album did extremely well (#43 on billboard). But as for me, I miss the screaming in their songs which they seemed to have abandoned on Hello Fascination. I miss the techno feeling to their songs, which is what initially drew me into Breathe Carolina and got me listening to them. I miss the old Breathe Carolina.

this review is waaay too opinionated.

jonas brothers and a miley cyrus reference (guilty pleasures maybe...)

and if anything, 3oh!3 ripped off some of BCs compressed, accented beats......matt squire just made it catchy.

To be fair, 3OH!3's first album came out before Brokencyde's first album did, atheir second came out about a year before Brokencyde's latest. I don't think you can claim that 3OH!3 is ripping of Brokencyde. Just sayin'.

how can matt squire change a band? he didn't write the shitty songs or propel the shitty "genre". matt squire has produced some great records (TREOS). don't lay the blame on him. take some responsibility. breath carolina and 3oh3 are both horrible bands.

The only way this album could possibly sound good is if you somehow managed to get distracted by all the colors on the album cover while "listening" to it.

Terrible record/band.

I would of respected this review a little more if he said he hated its classy not classic and kind of liked this record. Classy is fucking horrendous, fuck opinions. It's literally in the same league as brokencyde.

I didn't think hello fascination was that bad of an album. But vocals being 8.5???

Just checked, my argument still holds. Both of 3OH!3's CDs came out before Breathe Carolina released their first.
