I hope that one day I'll have my own business. That'd be cool
me too! I'm thinking of doing a minor based on entrepreneurship depending on what school I transfer to.

i majored in Education for my undergrad degree so i could become an elementary school teacher but never went through with teaching when i got out. Now, years later, i'm back to wanting to be a teacher - but this time for high school. I am going to go back and get my Master's degree soon along with my teaching certification so i can go in making a little bit more money than a beginning teacher typically makes. I plan on doing two subjects, Home Ec. and Health, to be better utilized in school.

Was planning on going to school to be an english teacher but I decided I'd rather try business instead. I hate to sound like I need material things, cause I don't, but I just want a career that pays a little better.

I switched from business to education, thinking I wasn't a material person so I wouldn't need a higher salary. Now I have bills, rent (which is really high in a college town), and a wedding to save for, among other things, and I'm making <$30k. It's not that I need material things, but I'd like to have a bit of a cushion, be able to start saving for my kids' college, a house, be able to donate to charities, etc. The trade-off is that I have incredible benefits and an incredible retirement plan, but that doesn't help me starting out when a large percentage of the aforementioned salary is being apportioned into those funds.

i'm an Elementary Education major. ideally i want to teach anywhere between third and fifth grade, or work as a reading specialist. in this job market, however, i will be lucky if i secure a teaching job as soon as i graduate. hopefully i can get a job and work on getting my masters at the same time. i'm really passionate about teaching and none of the career paths i ever considered taking would have made me much money anyway. it's a good fit for me, but it's definitely not for everyone.

I switched to business for all of those reasons you just mentioned. But I respect you for going the way that makes you happy.

I've highly considered it. Specifically, elementary education, if only because I love being around kids and I like everything, and it'd be nice to be able to teach/do multiple subjects in different fields. I've had a few of my teachers tell me I should be a teacher, but I don't know. I'm still patient with people when they're young, hah.

Right now, I'm majoring in biomedical engineering. Besides these things, I was also considering actuarial sciences (actuary/insurance type stuff), astronomy, creative writing, and photography. In an ideal world, I'd like to be able to teach during the school year and do BME stuff/research during the summers, but that's not something I see happening very easily. I figure if I'm BME, I can pursue my interests there and research and whatnot, and I can have children of my own to be around and teach (though I know it's not the same), whereas if I go the teacher route, I probably won't have any opportunities to do research. We'll see what happens.

That's true. If you're set on be able to teach multiple subjects, if you didn't know, you don't necessarily have to major in a subject to become certified (at least that's how it is in pennsylvania). You essentially just need a bachelor's degree in anything, and need to be able to pass the Praxis exam of your subject of choice. Of course, who is to say you'll actually get hired that way (ie. If you have a bachelors degree in Writing, and are capable of passing the English Praxis exam.)

In relation with what you're planning:

If you major in Mathematics Secondary Education, you can completely get away with a minor in English, and still be highly capable of passing your Praxis exams for both. It'll be a lot less work seeing that a B.S.Ed. in Mathematics is highly time consuming. When the time comes, talk to your adviser.

Just trying to make you aware of other options!

hahah, thank you very much. i still have the rest of senior year and basically freshman year to decide what to do (cause freshman year is basically only general education courses, from what i understand). i just need to get in the school that will allow me to do all of this...

I remember reading somewhere that the Actuarial science field is one of the best paying fields straight out of college.
