consciousness is merely a by-product of multiple parts of the brain functioning simultaneously, trying to communicate with one another, in an effort to work as a coherent structure. I saw a documentary on the BBC called Horizon on consciousness and what makes me 'me'.

A researcher actually states that he can see what decision we are going to make (based on fMRI scans) 6 seconds before we consciously decide to make it! This definitely puts to doubt the question whether we actually 'need' consciousness...
