1. How did you get your band name?
"A Life of Science" was an alternate title for our debut concept project, The Apneist, which is an album/comic book/novel multimedia endeavor. We ended up growing fond of the name and adopting it for our band.
2. How did this band get started?
Lead vocalist, James Keenan, assembled a band in Phoenix, Arizona with the idea of creating a concept album based loosely on a story he had written years back. Once the band began creating the album, they came up with the idea of expanding on the story concept with additional multimedia projects.
3. What bands are you influenced by?
Our biggest influences are fellow concept creators. The Dear Hunter are innovative because their concept project is so extensive. They just released album 3 of 7 in a giant concept series. Their style is fantastic as well. We are also influenced by the ideas of Coheed & Cambria (primarily their comic book / album projects). Our musical influences range from The Blood Brothers to Animal Collective and beyond.
4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would it be and why?
It would be great to tour with a fellow "concept band" like The Dear Hunter. It would also be amazing to join some big indie bands like Phoenix, Vampire Weekend or Owl City. But if we could have toured with The Who's "Tommy" tour, that would have been a match made in heaven.
5. If you were a furry, what animal would you be? Why that animal?
If we were furry animals, I would think bears would be a good option. Salmon is delicious and hybernation sounds like a good time.
6. Why should people listen to your band?
People should listen to A Life of Science because they can experience the songs on a whole new level. It makes us feel great when we get feedback from fans who immersed themselves in the album, artwork, story concept and comic book and had an experience with it. Your mind can run wild with The Apneist.
7. If you were chosen to be in Guitar Hero/Rock Band, what song would you want in the game? How hard do you think it would be to five-star on expert?
I think the best song for Guitar Hero/Rock Band would be "Rebels & Redcoats" because it is our 6 minute ballad, complete with guitar solos, bridges and chugs. Plus the time signature is 6/8, so it's a joy to play. It wouldn't be as hard as Dragon Force, but it would give your fingers a good workout.
8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
We would thank our mothers, lovers, producers, comic book team, novelist, video team, record label and, of course, the universe.
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
We are attempting to change the music industry ourselves by making music multimedia. In this digital age, we have the ability to create experiences that were never thought possible 20 years ago. The fact that we were able to reach out to our network to create multimedia supplements to our album on a shoestring budget with a very small team shows the power of today's technology and DIY capabilities.
10. Memorable tour experience?
Our tour manager had a birthday while we were in New York, so we went to a sushi restaurant to celebrate. The sake started flowing and a challenge arose... Our tour manager asked our guitarist, Anthony, to snort a line of wasabi (a la Steve O in Jackass) as a birthday present, which he did! It looked extremely painful and unpleasant. To get back at our TM, Anthony proceeded to sneak up on him and slap him in the face with a piece of raw fish.
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
Absolute Punk is the best place to go for news on all our favorite bands!
12. What is your favorite song to play?
We started playing out some songs from our new record that we are working on at some recent shows. One of them, code named "Kings of the Pavement," is a super fun pseudo indie surf jam. Our guitarists, Scott and Anthony, try to psych each other out while we play it, via ridiculous facial expressions and dance moves. First person to screw up a note loses.
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
We got our hearts set on Europe. UK baby! Or Japan...
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
We grew up on Weezer, Nirvana and other quintessential 90's rock.
15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
X-Ray vision, so we could undress females with our eyes.
16. Do you feel that your band has "made it"?
A Life of Science has been all around the country touring an album and comic book we love with amazing friends. Our 12 year old selves had wet dreams about this type of thing. We very well may have "made it" in the eyes of some, but our eyes are still set on the next big prize.
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
Most fans don't know that Scott the guitarist stands 6"6' tall, James the singer designs almost all of A Life of Science's artwork and web stuff, and Anthony the guitarist is terrified of flying.
18. What's your favorite holiday?
Halloween is tough to beat. We were the "Lollipop Guild" from Wizard of Oz for Halloween this year. Who knows what next year will bring.
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
A Life of Science loves playing Cornhole. We even brought our set on tour, offering all challengers that could beat us at "Bags" a free CD.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
Scott the guitarist does the best "Kermit the Frog" impression you have ever heard.
