Captain, We're Sinking - It's A Trap!
Record Label - Self Released
Release Date - January 29th, 2010
The reason I originally downloaded Captain, We're Sinking's latest EP was solely for the title. It immediately brings to mind the fabled Admiral Ackbar* whose fevered warning of impending peril was immortalized when he screamed "It's a trap!" This phrase is only second in my my mind to his calculated victory cry "Die dickheads!" So, I can assume it is in my best interest to thank Ackbar, lest I end up on the receiving end of the dickhead comment, because let's face it, It's a Trap! is fucking awesome.
The EP begins with the titular song, an exercise in pure intensity and raw emotion. I was immediately floored when the words "Well if you knew what I was thinking, you'd all abandon me" rang through out my speakers. The vocals are gritty and relentless, and they work so well. "Crushed By Milwaukee's Best" continues in a similar fashion; energetic, unforgiving pop-punk. The duel vocals of Bob Barret and Leo Vergnetti add extra depth to the songs and Zack Charret and Mike May round it out with a tight rhythm section.
It's a Trap! closes with "Gunner Merring Will Have His Revenge," a slower song, but arguably the rawest. The emotion is palpable, from the gruff harmonies to the dark lyrics. The EP finishes as strong as it started, and it stays consistent throughout. It would be ridiculous if you didn't go download it right now. No seriously, it's free. Do it.
* If you don't know who Admiral Ackbar is, go watch episodes IV, V, and VI of the Star Wars saga immediately you sad, deprived bastard. Well, after you listen to It's a Trap!, that is.
Ok, swap to the default theme for a bit and see if you can enter a comment. http://www.tiffanystores.org/
