As I Lay Dying - The Powerless Rise

As I Lay DyingThe Powerless Rise
Release Date: May 11, 2010
Record Label: Metal Blade

Metalcore geniuses As I Lay Dying have yet to disappoint with any of their releases. The Powerless Rise is another fantastic album by the band. It has more screamed vocals and less clean vocals. More of Tim Lambesis’s screaming means more epicness coming from them. The Powerless Rise is nearly flawless in almost every aspect.

The intro, “Beyond Our Suffering” completely shreds, and is a powerful, catchy intro that shows off Lambesis‘s new sound, albeit not completely unchanged. “Without Conclusion” shows off the unique guitar, which is a step up from An Ocean Between Us. “Parallels” is the best track on the whole album, with Lambesis screaming: In the parallels we struggle / struggle to upkeep / there is a better way for us to be set free / From all it is we crave, there must be more to life than to simply stay alive... to simply stay alive. It also shows Josh Gilbert’s very nice and really catchy clean vocals, which have drastically improved. It’s the perfect song to this album.

Jordan Mancino is still an impressive drummer, implementing his double bass more than ever, while Nick Hipa and Phil Sgrosso play what is their best guitar work to date. As I Lay Dying also still managed to keep away from many breakdowns. An Ocean Between Us had very good lyrics, and The Powerless Rise keeps it up on this release. In “The Plague,” Lambesis screams: While religion tries to blame what we cannot see / I accept that part of the problem is me / It was never a sacred mandate to accept conformity / through select revelations that we choose to believe. It is still very impressive.

From this review, it may give the impression that this album is perfect, but it’s unfortunately not. Gilbert’s vocals improved so much that I wish he actually sang more this time around. Another thing is that huge fans of An Ocean Between Us may or may not like Lambesis’s slightly changed but noticeable new sound. All in all, As I Lay Dying have released another outstanding, must-buy album that can go in your personal As I Lay Dying collection. This album does not disappoint, thus you have no reason not to pick this up.

I might get bashed for this but in a way i believe that the member rating is somewhat more accurate than the author rating... not to disrespect the author at all but for some reason this album isn't as good as their previous release in my opinion. I love As I Lay Dying I still listen to An Ocean Between Us frequently from beginning to end. However I got The Powerless Rise when it came out and maybe listened to the album as a whole twice and that was pretty much the extense of it being played on my ipod. Even after a month of not listening to the cd i started listening to it tonight, but ended up switching to an different album after a song and a half. There is just something about it that after a minute or so of it being played it becomes boring no matter what song I play from the album. Its really a shame since this band is really talented.

but again the amount of people thinking this is the band's best work so far(and IT IS) and the people who think it sucks is very lopsided

Oh I bet Im not saying that its bad in any regard lol I still would recommend it to people, however for me there is something about the album that i get really bored with. Maybe the production is not doing it for me, even though the production got a really good score. Im not sure

I often feel like that when an band releases an album right after one that I loved to death. Even if it's good it takes me a while to get into it because I want to be blown away like I was with the last album. Just one of those things I think.
