1. How did you get your band name?
Shirock is Chuck and Pap’s last name.
2. How did this band get started?
Shirock started with Chuck writing, singing, and beginning to record demos a lot through high school and college. Early on he brought Pap into that process. While in Nashville studying music, Chuck & Pap hooked up with Adam Gatchel (drums) and later Kevin Whitsett (bass) and Evan Weatherford (guitar).
3. What bands are you influenced by?
Lately we’ve been influenced by artists & bands like Bruce Springsteen, New Order, Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel…always Thom Yorke and Radiohead – bands that are pioneers and whose music cause us to feel something.
4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would it be and why?
It would be amazing to tour with some of the greats, both current and from the past. A lot of these artists are the same that influence us. Bands like U2, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles - artists like Michael Jackson and Peter Gabriel. Just to see them in their work and environment. It would so incredible to learn from them. As far as us touring with a band as an opener – Depeche Mode in Europe would be amazing. We want to play for people that are at the show to be emotionally moved.
5. If you were a furry, what animal would you be? Why that animal?
Shirock is more of a machine than an animal.
6. Why should people listen to your band?
We could spend a lot less energy doing what we do if we didn’t care who heard it. We write because there is music inside of us waiting to get out. But we try above all to be open and honest in what we write, because we hope and believe that what we have to say will connect and bring hope or joy or companionship to someone or at least cause them to question things around them and take a step toward growth as a human being.
7. If you were chosen to be in Guitar Hero/Rock Band, what song would you want in the game? How hard do you think it would be to five-star on expert?
Actually “New Solution”, our first single from our record Everything Burns will be on Rock Band 3, out early this year! There will be guitar and keyboard parts you have to play and background vocals to sing. It’s going to take some long hours and dedication to get to expert. ☺
8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
If Shirock won a Grammy, I think the people we would want to thank are the ones who first instilled and encouraged the passions for music that we have and have believed in this from the very beginning (our families and the people who are a part of the Shirock team), and the fans who make this all come to life.
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
There are so many things we could say that we’d like to change about the music industry, but I think a better approach is to just DO them. As a band, we try to do that on a daily basis. We try not to be defined by how people have done things before us but instead find our own way and learn through mistakes what works and what doesn’t.
10. Memorable tour experience?
We have so many memorable tour experiences and most of our favorites are simply the moments on stage when we really connect with fans and are able to share our lives with one another. But here’s a funny experience from a couple years back: During the summer we got to a festival we were playing at in Kentucky, and Cicadas (the massive flying bugs with red eyes) were in season. They get really bad in the south every 13 or 17 years or something, and this was one of those times. They were absolutely everywhere, covering the ground and all of our equipment as we unloaded it onto the stage. They landed all over us while we were playing our set, and I think Adam unintentionally hit a few with his sticks while playing drums, but we still managed to make it through the set. But it was unbelievably gross.
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
AbsolutePunk.net is a site for all music-lovers, even if you’re a fan of other genres than Punk. It’s one of those sites you want to have on your ‘favorites’ list: a place to not only discover new and upcoming bands but also to keep current with bands you already love through interviews, photos, videos and tons of exclusive content that’s always fresh. There’s a wealth of stuff to discover on AP.net – it’s somewhere we love to explore.
12. What is your favorite song to play?
One of our favorite songs to play live is the title track from our album, Everything Burns. It’s a very important song to us and encompasses a lot of why we do what we do. I think that just lends it to being a very emotional song, and one that we really love sharing with fans. It’s one of those songs that when it’s good it’s the highest point in the show…it keeps us on our toes and forces us to connect with the music and the audience.
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
Somewhere beautiful - with good food, drinks, shopping and beaches...somewhere peaceful. Aside from that criteria, it’s too hard to narrow it down.
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
All of us in Shirock grew up with music all around us, but a few musical themes that stand out would be: the music of The Beatles, the soundtracks from Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story, and Tchaikovsky’s Peter and the Wolf.
15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
As a band, I think we would chose to have the power of flight—no more driving to shows! Or the ability to somehow automatically transport all of our gear and have it setup without ever doing anything.
16. Do you feel that your band has "made it"?
The term “made it” is pretty hard to define…but we feel so blessed and thankful to be able to do what we are passionate about: write and record music and share it with anyone who wants to listen. To us, that is “making it”.
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
Something not everyone may know about Shirock is that we all play more than one instrument (and two people in the band are exceptional brass players).
18. What's your favorite holiday?
There’s nothing as magical and meaningful as Christmas…in Nashville this year we had a white Christmas and it was so beautiful and peaceful.
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
We don’t have too much "spare" time, but spending time with family and friends is pretty high up on the list…aside from that, we covet time to rest, read, relax, and create.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
A few hidden talents: Pap has knit some awesome hats, scarves and even a sweater. Chuck is good at making a perfect shot of espresso. Adam can pretty much build a house from the ground up. Kevin’s talent is that his feet have insanely high arches.
