1. Please state your name and the role in the project.
My name is Chris Stealy, this record would be the brain child of Curtis Tinsley and myself.
2. Can you give a little background on the vinyl split?
This record was a long and slow process. We came up with the idea to do a split while I was over seas about a year ago. It wasn't until I got home we actually went through with it and made the record. Although I had written and recorded my songs while I was in Iraq, Curt recorded his with a buddy a few months after I got home. Curtis did all the artwork for the album too.
3. This is your first folk record. What were some of the challenges writing and recording?
I'd say the biggest challenge making this record was just finding time to write and record the material. Communication was also another difficult thing, it was hard for the two of us to stay in contact since I was gone at the time.
4. Can you explain where you wrote a lot of the songs? The inspiration is very genuine and rare to come across.
All my songs were written in my little trailer on Camp Ramadi haha. Most of my inspiration came from friends and family back home. Also it came from a lot of reading. If I wasn't writing music I spent most my time reading books. Kerouac, Burroughs, Ginsberg, a lot of my inspiration came from those great beat writers. Vonnegut was another big one too. musically, Elliott Smith has always been a huge inspiration, the man was a great song writer and there was so much feeling and emotion behind all of his songs.
5. You're starting a record label. Can you explain the mission behind it?
So native son is the "label" Curt and I released our record on. we decided to release the record on our own. I guess the main goal is to put out music and help artist we feel deserve recognition. It isn't cheap to put out a record, and I want to be able to help my friends and artist who truly deserve it.
6. What were some influences?
I guess the biggest influence starting this label came from a show I played a couple years back. I was in St. Louis playing in a different band at the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center. I just got this great vibe from these artist and musicians there, that whole DIY attitude. I thought to myself, "this is what music is all about, these cats deserve to be heard, there on a whole another level". This is where i met curt.
7. Should we expect any new material from Christopher Stealy in 2011?
I'm always writing music, every day. I'm always putting something new out, so yes 2011 you'll hear all sorts of music and projects Iv done with friends. Right now I'm mainly focused on the "Navigator" release, which is Curtis main project. Drew Gowran drums, these guys have great dynamic, and write some of the best music Iv ever heard.
