Come the fuck on, people. You're all sounding like Sarah Palin blaming the "lame-stream" media.

King's significance was as a civil rights leader for racial equality. If we celebrated a holiday for Michael Jordan, would we honor his baseball playing? The simple fact was that his calls for economic equality were insignificant. He did not have a "I have a dream" moment with regards to economics. He did not start any movements with longterm mobility.

Furthermore, if you want to bring up some things the media always ignores on MLK day, try these:

His plagarised dissertation
He cheated on his wife

AND YOU KNOW WHAT? I think these things also AREN'T important to the true significance of the holiday for King. The right-wing would be similarly idiotic to criticize the media for glorifying "hate whitey day", as Ron Paul has called it.

Serj is a jackass so who honestly cares that he didn't get some apology? The dude has written how many anti-American songs?
anti-American ? NONE, Anti-American government ? Plenty.

It's funny how most of the people think that patriotism means not doubting and always supporting your government, even if it really is a bunch of fucking hypocrites ...

The US has a representative government. I'm not trying to say Serj is or isn't actually an asshole, but there's really not a distinction between the people and the government, unless the people want there to be.

I don't agree with you , Yes, the citizens of the United States do have the right to vote, and that's where it ends ... The candidates are a bunch of pussies and the propagandistic system that democracy in almost every country is based on is very delusive, people can't be blamed for their vote, even if they will regret their vote in the future ... How were the Armenians supposed to know that the promise was just a political strategy ? How are you supposed to know that the candidate you will vote for isn't just a better actor than Marlon Brando ?

Representative government doesn't exactly work the way you would want it to work, cause 90% of politicians are liars ... And also, how do people know that the votes were not manipulated ?

We here also can choose our leaders, but how can you choose the right man/woman when everybody's dishonest ? If you get deceived by a politician, should it automatically mean that you are responsible for his/her actions ?

The thing is, his calls for economic equality were entirely related to his calls for racial equality. For him, and others who can make that case, the two were intimately connected. His message was shifting to economic equality, but before that could occur, he was assassinated. The two items you mentioned are unrelated to those facts.

If Obama becomes President (which is still unlikely at this point), mark my words, he will be among the great Presidents. The reason why so many in our generation like him is because he is progressive yet still has a sense of pragmaticism and reason that impacts his views on issues. He is also the only candidate in the 08 race besides Dennis Kucinich to be right about the Iraq War. You gotta give the guy credit for that. It wasn't the political expedient thing to do at the time. Importantly, I trust Obama. You know how Superman says he would never lie? Well I feel that Obama would be the same way to the American people.

oh yeah, and to not get to off topic with the thread. MLK was a big proponent of social and economic justice. Just like Rosa Parks, our society de-fangs these prominent leaders while watering down their message. Essentially, their actions and words are cherry-picked; basically anything to undermine how just effective a mass movement/protest could be. Now, I'm not saying this "lost history" is entirely intentional. We give secular sainthood to white leaders such as Washington and Lincoln and basically promote the myths that surround them, ie. cherry tree, "freeing the slaves." It's just the way our collective history is taught, in form of national myth. That being said, I hope students, particularly college students are given the truth of who these people are, and in the case of MLK, learn the more non-PC, controversial aspects of his beliefs, such as his democratic socialist message. Also, we have to keep in mind that in some ways, MLK's vision for non-violent resistance was not widely accepted, and often mocked. You can say that in some ways, at least in urban cities, Malcolm X was more influential (another historical figure greatly overlooked.) It was Malcolm X that gave way to the Black Panthers and a host of other black nationalist groups that were more sympathetic to the poor, urban youth that were the lumpenproleteriat of our society. Of course, many folks like to contrast MLK and Malcolm X as one being righteous, the other being violent, and racist. But Malcolm X was right in many areas...especially in being skeptical of the white liberal establishment. But alas, this is for another debate...
