Diluted Thought - 10.19.11
|The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:|
1. How did you get your artist name?
Well my nick name back in high school used to be Think for reasons too boring to mention, but it seemed to have stuck with me through that time in my life. So I decided I would stick to that idea, but instead of going by Think I changed it over to Thought. It took me a few days to add Diluted to the front of that, all thanks to one of my favorite metal acts at the time, Slipknot. Their first album has a song titled "Diluted," so I took it and made it mine. That was the birth of Diluted Thought.
2. How did this artist get started?
As everything I've come to do as a passion, including music, it first started as a joke. I would write a rhyme battle with a "dj" I had in my class and we'd just go back and fourth. I continued writing because it felt like a release to me after some time. It was therapeutic, as lame, cheesy, and cliche as that sounds. But I stuck with it through college and just kept going until I found some place to record. I've been recording since '05 and I've grown alot since then.
3. What bands are you influenced by?
I wanna say alot of the Nu Metal I was listening to back in the days like Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park (yeah I was part of that era) but these days I'm listening to a lot of different genres apart from metal. In fact, to make a long story short, I listen to everything or every genre now and I'm always updating my library with whatever catches my ear.
4. If you could tour with any act, past or present, who would they be and why?
Oh man I'm torn. There are just so many. But if I had chose one for the question I'd go with Andrew W K. I think his fans and the people that go to his shows really go to have a good time and listen to fun upbeat music. I may not fit into the genre, but I don't think that would stop me from doing it.
5. Best food to eat on tour?
Pizza, wings, pizza, and the occasional yogurt and fiber to clean me out. Delicious. But to be quite honest, I've become a fan of visiting a local spot any stop we make. I got food poisoning by doing so, but hey it was all part of being on tour and eating unwisely.
6. Why should people listen to you?
Well why wouldn't they? I can sit here and tell people how great my music / album / sound is but that doesn't mean anything if the person just doesn't have an open mind for it or even care to listen in the first place due to some pre judgment they've made right after they've seen me or heard me describe my music. But my sales pitch usually goes something like "It's fun upbeat music that incorporates the genres of Hip Hop, Techno, Disco, House, Electro, and Trance. And that's just the first album! Wait til you hear what I've got planned for the 2nd!". I did this because I enjoy all types of music but also because I know for a fact that with so much music coming out you only limit yourself if you touch on one genre. I'm trying to get into all of them.
7. If you could be any athlete, which athlete would you switch places with?
Rob Dyrdek. I don't know if he's an athlete per se, but he does what he loves and now he's set for life and all aspects of it.
8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
Besides the parentals? Anyone who cared about me enough to support what I do and enjoy it, whether it's friends fans or family members because if they didn't give S*** that would really have led me down a different path.
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
Just when you think you know the music industry you really have no clue. I wouldn't change it, I would rather just find a way around it.
10. Memorable tour experience?
Dying from food poisoning outside of a venue and feeling all kinds of deathly vibes. Out of nowhere some English guy comes up and talks to me and ask why me and my band aren't performing. I explained that I'm ill as all hell (as can be noticed by my insanely pale skin) and that I don't think it would be a good idea. He then began to mock me and said, "What? I...I don't understand, I've never seen anything like that before" - indicating to me that we're failures. Yes that's what I took from that comment. I got upset, told my band "F*** It were already here let's just do this" and I performed for maybe 3 people that night. I didn't care how many people there were but I wasn't about to be a failure in anyone's eyes.
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
It means that people still care enough about others to expose them to more people. I'm glad I found this site and the music on it!
12. What is your favorite song to play?
Well the crowd favorite, if you want to call it that, is a song called "That's Creeping Me Out." I take 2 lovely ladies in the audience (The ones with the most friends in the crowd!) and pretend they're my ex girlfriends and just make fun of them. It seems to be a hit with the people.
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
Oh there have been plenty, but San Diego, California has got to be the greatest vacation I've taken. That place is gorgeous but stupid expensive!
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Well there is plenty of it, but I want to say 80's and early 90's pop and Nu Metal / Pop Punk when I was high school. I haven't listened to much of it lately but when it comes on nostalgia hits quick!
15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
The ability to control metal like Magnito! And I don't mean metal music of course, but not only can he stop bullets, he can levitate which now gives you a 2nd option of flying! Yeah! And if not that, then the power to absorb thoughts, and abilities like Sylar from Heroes.
16. Any pre-show superstitions or rituals?
Stretching, jumping, and a shot of Tequila.
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
I imagine music or songs as colors sometimes...
18. What is your assessment of the current state of radio? Do you think it's a place where your band could flourish?
On the right stations I think it would do great! Here in my hometown of El Paso nothing goes on rotation unless it's already deemed acceptable by OTHER stations. We're quite behind on the times over here so outside of the pop / soft hit station everything else is too depressing to listen to because there is just never enough variety.
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Other than music, I enjoy a good session in gaming. I've been an avid X Boxer for the last few months, I'm also addicted to Netflix and writing reviews on awesomely bad b-movies for my website Fuyaradio.com. I also enjoy cruising around the city to meet up with people as long as my gas tank allows it. I'm a simple dude so I like to do simple things that tend to entertain me.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
I'm fantastic at pointing out the ages of women AND I've learned how to call a non-successful business move and predict whether something is going to be a flop.
