Sweep this under the rug? They've publicly addressed he has mental issues, for which he's being treated for. They're not saying let's forget about it, they're saying that it's not really the public's concern to worry about him now that he's being treated, but rather focus on other more important things.
That's good he's getting help but people won't forget about this. Plus, this hurts the mission at hand. Who wants to support something when one of the driving forces behind it is a lunatic?
