It's like we (canadian musicians) are trapped. It's so difficult to go to the states too so there's not many options for us.

I'm not too surprised. Buying stuff online is more money than I want to spend once shipping is factored in. Buying in-person at stores like HMV costs $15 or more. Digital is the obvious choice, unless the band happens to do a cross Canada tour. That doesn't happen much nowadays either so I still end up relying on digital downloads.

Loads of canadian music is just poor copies of american styles so why would we settle for that. The only way a lot of the canadian bands get any play is because the radio stations up here have no choice but to play a percentage of canadian content.

Also I personally would be buying even more music if google music or amazon mp3 finally got themselves set up in canada.

Whatever, haha. I would say loads of Canadian music is just as good, if not better, than what's being made in the States. Yes, it is "American" but what do you expect? Whenever I go to Colorado no one EVER assumes I'm Canadian. And while Propagandhi and Japandroids could pass as an American band, that doesn't mean that they suck or that they're not worth listening to. I think the main reason why Canadians listen to less Canadian music is just because there's so much less of it. Our population is nothing compared to the US so even if you're like me, a proud supporter of Canadian artists, you're still going to be listening to mostly American bands.

Canada has a ton of great bands, I discover more and more band from there as the years go on.

Please define "Canadian Style" so I know which bands are not copying our southern brothers.

What a ridiculous comment. Canada has always had fantastic muscians which are globally recognized. Think of Rush, The Band, Arcade Fire, Our Lady Peace - classic Canadian rock bands. Then you have artists like Avril and Bieber who are continually "copied" and they are Canadian.

Do yourself a favour and spend some time listening to Canadian artists, especially the ones i didn't mention, you won't regret it.

Of course we are. Most HMV stores only carry billboard top 10 albums, and when you want to order in a less popular band (like I did, with Frightened Rabbit) they want $24.00 for the album. Why would I pay that when I can get it for $7.99 on itunes?

I know waaay more Canadian bands than most of my friends and they are pretty much all not on the radio (which I don't listen to) and I've actually never purchased a single digital song or album, ever. and I don't ever plan to. I prefer owning the physical CD.

Mother Mother, the New Porno's, Arcade Fire, Chad VanGaalen, Rural Alberta Advantage, Stars, BSS, Metric, Feist, Dan Mangan, the Constantines, Dallas Green, Tegan and Sara... I mean that's just off the top of my head. Having said that, I do find that I mostly listen to American bands, but I think that's mostly like what Deborah said about the population thing.
