I really don't feel Suburbia sounds like The Upsides that much at all.

impactwise, Upsides will have the advantage. but I feel suburbia is a better album.

Why? What makes it "better"?
the songwriting isn't drastically different, the guitars are more "complex" I guess but still not really anything too mindblowing. I don't see the huge difference as to how it's a better album

the things that make it better (to me, at least, i can see people disagreeing with everything im about to say) are the songwriting (which like you said isnt drastically different but i do think it is a bit more interesting), the musicianship (seriously the drums on Suburbia...wowza), and the production is much much much better. I also think the albums stand outs are better than the upsides stand outs and it feels a bit more...concise and focused. but like i said, i can see the argument from both sides.

it's weird too, because I remember the first two months of Suburbia being so so so disappointed and I never thought it'd surpass the upsides.

I haven't listened to them in forever. I'll listen to the new album when it comes out, but I can't justify seeing this band live again. maybe when the new album comes out, but not until then. I'm just so ridiculously tired of having to worry about my surroundings at all times at their shows. I'm sure I sound like a wimp now, but I used to be all about that stuff a year or two ago, but I guess now I'm just a grumpy old man.

Soupy's voice alone on Suburbia makes the album 100x better. And his voice on all the recent stuff they've been doing is great.

Well, just to start, I'm pretty sure they did extremely little production on Soupys voice on suburbia compared to the upsides. it's in an interview somewhere. I don't see how you could say the vocals are the same - the upsides featured much more prominent, classic, poppunk nasally vocals while suburbia was a lot more rough around the edges.
