Featured Stream & Track-by-Track: A Tale of Two Cities

Posted by - 12:38 AM on 10/23/12
Today we're streaming the new EP from melodic British outfit A Tale of Two Cities. New Horizons can be found on the band's AP.net profile and if you enjoyed the grandeur of the new Young Guns record this four-track effort is well worth a listen. There's also a track-by-track guide to the EP from the band themselves in the replies.

Track-by-Track"Four Words"
Musically it's quite simple to perform but was probably the hardest of the 4 songs to write. We toiled for a couple of weeks with ideas and almost dropped it altogether. We decided to move the outro to the start of the song and then totally re-wrote it in about 20 minutes after struggling for so long! The lyrics to this song are very personal. It's about hurting someone and not getting a chance to explain why. The title 'Four Words' comes from the four words that were said which destroyed something that took years to build.

"Familiar Traits"
Familiar Traits was written in sections and pieced together afterwards but they all fit really nicely. The outro is quite different to our normal style but we wanted to write a song ending with a very heavy a Muse style, riffing vibe. Lyrically the song is about your journey through life, the need for change and evolving yourself. Everyone has to make their own choices and find their own path through life. No matter what happens you can stay positive and carry on with your own journey.

"The Fire Burning Through Our Wings"
This song is about sharing a bond with someone and walking away from them. It's quite regretful in the sense that walking away was very much the easy option in hindsight. This was the last song we wrote for the EP. We had a different version of this which we were going to record, then in our last rehearsal before we went into the studio we changed the intro and chorus to what we have now.

"Machine"
Lyrically Machine is a reflection on how we feel society is at the moment. There are a lot of people struggling to survive day to day and being made to take on the burden in society, while the social elite continue to live un-troubled. We wanted the chorus to stand out like a rallying cry to unite people. We feel this is very much a "musicians song". We wrote it with the intention of having the sections come in waves, where the intensity of the music builds and then drops down to keep the listener interested. It might not be the most accessible song on the EP to all listeners but it's a real favourite of ours to play.

New Horizons is is now available on bandcamp.

Not heard these before but I dig! Loving the guitars and I can hear the Young Guns vibe.
